This year, the jury has nominated Carla Klein, Gyz La Riviere and Renie Spoelstra, who will each present an overview of new and existing work. During the opening there will be performances by Bliss.
The Rotterdam-based artists Carla Klein, Renie Spoelstra and Gyz la Rivière are the nominees
for the Dolf Henkes Award 2012. The Dolf Henkes Award is presented every two years to a
prominent Rotterdam artist. The artists, one of whom will win 12,000 euro, were nominated
by a four-person jury chaired by art collector Joop van Caldenborgh. An exhibition of the
nominees’ work will take place in TENT. The winner will be announced on Thursday 10
January.
At the request of Rotterdam artist Dolf Henkes(1903-1989), a part of his legacy is reserved for a
stimulus prize for artists who, like the man from whom the award derives its name, are
standard-bearers for the city of Rotterdam. The previous winners of the Award are Jeroen
Eisinga, Erik van Lieshout, Melvin Moti and Lara Almarcegui; all respected and internationally
oriented artists. The Dolf Henkes Award 2012 has no age or disciplinary restrictions, which
makes it a wide-ranging award for artists that are currently placing Rotterdam art on the map.
The jury, comprising Joop van Caldenborgh (art collector), Lara Almarcegui (winner Dolf Henkes
Award 2010), Wilma Sütö (curator modern art Stedelijk Museum Schiedam) and Sandra Smets
(art critic),were unanimous in their nomination of Carla Klein, Renie Spoelstra and Gyz La
Rivière.
Carla Klein (Zwolle, 1970) is conspicuous for the way in which she renders desolate industrial
landscapes in spectacular, monotone paintings. Her work is often based on photographic
material and yet, the imagination predominates.
Renie Spoelstra (Drachten, 1974) has been working for years on a consistent oeuvre of
monumental charcoal drawings. She sketches her wooded landscapes with grand gestures,
whereby she zooms in on her subjects to such an extent that they are returned their essence.
Multi-artist Gyz La Rivière (Rotterdam, 1976) convinced the jury immediately with his expressive
work that flirts with popular visual culture. His body of work transcends disciplines; books, films,
design, installations and performances are all included in his repertoire. Rotterdam is the
connecting thread in his work; the city’s past provides the material for his images of the future.
