Exhibitions of An Exhibition brings the work and artists together in a way that leads one to consider the relationships that manifest in the configuration of the works
Casey Kaplan is pleased to announce Exhibitions of An Exhibition, a project
guest curated by Berlin based curator Jens Hoffmann, presenting the work of:
Meschac Gaba, Benin
Brian Jungen, Canada
Simryn Gill, Singapore
Marepe, Brazil
Joseph Grigely, United States
Rosemarie Trockel, Germany
Roni Horn, United States
Exhibitions of An Exhibition does not state any concept, theme or idea that
ties the pieces artists together. The exhibition does not try to 'resolve'
how the work might fit together. Rather, it brings the work and artists
together in a way that leads one to consider the relationships that manifest
in the configuration of the works.
The invited group of artists represents an entirely subjective selection of
contemporary work that Hoffmann has bought together for the first time. All
participants are among a prominent group of artists that have participated
in international exhibitions such as Documenta (Trockel, Horn, Gaba), the
Venice and Whitney Biennials (Grigely, Marepe, Trockel, Horn, Gaba) and the
Biennials in Berlin and Sydney (Grigely, Trockel) among many others.
Four New York based curators have been invited to reflect on this selection
and write a short text answering the question of how they see the works and
the artists in relation to each other. By doing so, each curator,
necessarily, begins to curate her/his own exhibition. Despite including the
exact same artists and works, the result will be four different exhibition
concepts based on a prearranged selection of artists. Each concept will be
presented as a text in the gallery space along with the works of art. The
following curators have been invited:
Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy
Tumelo Mosaka
Rai Malasauskas
