The 63rd Berlin International Film Festival will take place from February 7 to 17, 2013. Since mid-January, the poster for the Berlinale 2013 has already been displayed around the Potsdamer Platz and all over Berlin. The poster’s motif will also appear on many of the Festival’s publications.

“The poster for the Berlinale 2013 will again add a bright note to the city’s winter landscape and set the mood for the Festival. The Berlinale Bear has no time to sleep in winter,” says Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.

“The Berlinale Bear is an eye-catcher and an incredibly strong symbol. Even if it is not completely visible, it is recognizable. And the use of many colours underscores the Berlinale’s vibrant image,” states BOROS, the agency designing the artwork for the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.

This year the Haus der Berliner Festspiele will host again discussions with movers and shakers, key players and experts after selected screenings. Building upon last year's success, the Berlinale is offering a space for an extensive dialogue with the audience. At five events a total of five documentaries from the Berlinale Special programme as well as three short documentaries from the special series "NATIVe - A Journey into Indigenous Cinema" will be screened. The discussions will be recorded and made available as video on demand streams on the Berlinale website.

One of the festival's greatest highlights this year promises to be a projection in the Berliner Liquidrom which forms part of the Forum Expanded. In addition, the group exhibition is taking place in Wedding's former crematorium. Curator Stefanie Schulte Strathaus about conquering space, how particles desire to form a wave and phone calls from outer space.

In the "Close Up!" project by C/O Berlin and the Berlinale, 14 young photographers aged 20 to 25 are invited to show what they can do – and what they see. A very personal view of the festival's glamour and daily routine is what counts
This years participants: Philip Bartz, Rian Davidson, Anne Eger, Johanna Maria Fritz, Daniel Goede, Tim Heide, Nora Heinisch, Tobias Kappel, Natash Klimenko, Paul Lehr, Veronica Losantos Sanchez, Tom Palluch, Mara Ploscaru and Stefanie Schmid Rincon.
The photographs will be shown at C/O Berlin at the conclusion of the Berlinale and the best series will receive an award.

In 2013, the Generation 14Plus competition celebrates its tenth edition. Section director Maryanne Redpath and co-director Florian Weghorn talk about the dramaturgical drives and importance of location in this year's Generation programme.

In this year's Perspektive Deutsches Kino, young German cinema shows its strength and diversity. A dominant theme of the programme is “departure”. In an interview, section head Linda Söffker talks about the eleven films nominated to compete for the “FGYO – Prize Dialogue en perspective” - as well as the rest of the programme.

Once again this year the Forum takes a broad look at the global film scene. We interviewed section director Christoph Terhechte about local perspectives on global phenomena, the growing popularity of experimental narrative forms and the discussion culture of a Russian workers' club.

The Panorama is one of the most eclectic sections of the Berlinale. This year bold American films, numerous directing debuts and documentaries in an abundance of styles and subjects stand out. The following interview with section director Wieland Speck reveals the contexts of this year's programme.

Maike Mia Höhne describes this year's Berlinale Shorts programme as star-shaped: the films complement and interact with one another and exhibit an interplay which goes beyond the immediately apparent thematic dimension. In our interview, the curator gives an overview of the big picture.

In 2013, the Berlinale is introducing a brand new series focusing on the cinematic storytelling of Indigenous peoples. In its first year the programme comprises 24 features, documentaries and short films from Australia, Oceania, North America and the Arctic region. The series is called ”NATIVe - A Journey into Indigenous Cinema”. In our interview, curator Maryanne Redpath emphasises the diversity of Indigenous films and explains how her intention for the series is to create a one-of-a-kind platform for exchange.

The Culinary Cinema examines the garden, looking at it both as a place and a metaphor. For there's an important parallel between film and gardens. The garden is an in-between space, the bridge between natural wilderness and the artificiality of houses and streets.
Film too is made of in-between spaces and individual frames. Every single frame lets light through and advances in a specific order and speed. The inertia of human perception turns these single frames into motion sequences, which our minds quickly process into stories. A single frame is like a garden patch in a pool of sunlight.

Trying out new formats, discovering new ways of producing and finding new audiences: these are the main threads running through this year's Berlinale Talent Campus programme. Programme Manager Matthijs Wouter Knol and Project Manager Christine Tröstrum talk in an interview about the intricacies of creating great entertainment and strengthening independent films.

In 2013, the Retrospective – titled “The Weimar Touch. The International Influence of Weimar Cinema after 1933” – is dedicated to the impact of Weimar cinema on international filmmaking in the period after the Nazis rose to power. The section will be particularly focused on the diverse characteristics of Weimar cinema as well as its transformations and adaptations in the cinematographies of other countries. In an informative interview, curator and section head Rainer Rother sketches a picture of this remarkably dynamic era of German film and its influences.

After a few words of greeting from Minister of State for Cultural and Media Affairs Bernd Neumann and Governing Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit, the Festival will be officially opened by Jury President Wong Kar Wai (Hong Kong, China) and Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick. The International Jury - whose other members are Susanne Bier (Denmark), Andreas Dresen (Germany), Ellen Kuras (USA), Shirin Neshat (Iran), Tim Robbins (USA) and Athina Rachel Tsangari (Greece) – will also be introduced during the gala. Anke Engelke will again host the evening. This year’s music will be provided by Ulrich Tukur & Die Rhythmus Boys. 3sat will be broadcasting the opening live.

Following the gala, Wong Kar Wai’s epic martial-arts drama The Grandmaster will have its international premiere. The director and his leading actors, Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang, will personally present the film to the audience in the Berlinale Palast.

The members of the International Jury, the International Short Film Jury and the Best First Feature Award Jury are all expected on the Red Carpet.
