Art and social concerns come together at ARCOmadrid with the collaboration of the Pequeño Deseo Foundation, DKV Integralia Foundation, ONCE Foundation, Balia Foundation and ARCO Foundation
From 13 to 17 February Madrid hosts a new edition of ARCOmadrid, the International Contemporary Art Fair organised by IFEMA, which for the last 32 years has made the Spanish capital a significant hub attracting collectors, gallerists, artists and art professionals from all over the world.
For its 32nd edition, ARCOmadrid is bringing together a total of 201 galleries from 27 countries, 146 of which are participating in the General Programme and 55 in the Curated Programmes. It is the most international edition of recent years, with 66% foreign participation – 133 galleries. A markedly international profile, to which can be added the attendance of 150 professionals, 90% from abroad, and 250 active foreign collectors. This reach is largely thanks to the international promotion efforts of ARCOmadrid over the last year.
Halls 8 and 10 of Feria de Madrid will host galleries from practically every continent. One of the major attractions of the Fair will be FOCUS TURKEY, a section which enjoys the collaboration of the Turkish Embassy to Spain and the participation of the curator Vasif Kortun, director of research and programmes at SALT Istanbul, and the assistant curator Lara Fresko, writer and art professional, who have selected the 10 Turkish galleries which will take part in the programme.
The international presence also plays a major role in the curated programmes. For example, OPENING: YOUNG GALLERIES brings together 25 galleries from Asia, America and Europe which have been operating for less than seven years, selected by Manuel Segade, curator and art critic, and Veronica Roberts, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum in Austin, Texas.
Also, SOLO PROJECTS, in partnership with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo, AECID) gathers 21 art projects by Latin American artists selected by the curators Inti Guerrero, associate artistic director of TEOR/éTica (Costa Rica); Catalina Lozano, independent curator and co-founder of de_sitio (Mexico); Gabriel Pérez Barreiro, manager of Fundación Cisneros /Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection, (New York and Caracas); Alexia Tala, independent curator (Chile), and Cristiana Tejo, independent curator (Brazil).
Meanwhile, large-scale works of art are concentrated in SOLO OBJECTS, a section showing a total of 17 projects from Spanish and international galleries, again curated by Manuel Blanco, professor of architectural composition at ETSAM-UPM.
International meeting point
ARCOmadrid is one of the year's most important international gatherings. Proof of this is the confirmed attendance of more than 150 professionals from all over the world, who are coming to Madrid to visit and take part in the programme of activities, forums and meetings at the Fair. Among other events, they will attend the 2nd Meeting of European and Ibero-American Museums, which can count on the participation of more than 50 directors and curators from some of the world's most notable museums of contemporary art, such as Bart De Baere, director of the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art (Belgium); Jesús Maria Carrillo, director of the Cultural Programmes Department of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía; Tadeu Chiarelli, director of the Contemporary Art Museum of São Paulo University (Brazil); Charles Esche, of the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (Netherlands); João Fernandes deputy director of conservation, research and dissemination of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía; Ann Gallagher, co-director of the Tate Collection; Nydia Gutiérrez, curator of the Museo de Antioquía (Medellín, Colombia); Natalia Majluf, director of the Lima Art Museum MALI;Zdenka Badovinac, director of Galerija de Liubliana (Slovenia); Bartomeu Marí, director of the Museu dArt Contemporani Barcelona (MACBA); Soledad Novoa, curator of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Chile; Agustín Pérez-Rubio, Director, MUSAC, and María Inés Rodríguez, director of the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico, among others.
There will also be an important presence from the United States. Directors and curators from US museums invited by ARCOmadrid will be attending, accompanied by members of their acquisition committees: more than 50 collectors and professionals from US contemporary art institutions such as The Bronx Museum of the Arts; Utah Museum of Contemporary Art; MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland; Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum; Americas Society; San Jose Museum of Art; Walker Art Center; Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; The Drawing Center; SculptureCenter; Museo del Barrio; Miami Art Museum.
There will also be other special guests, directors of institutions, biennials and other international events, as well as 250 notable collectors – more than in previous editions – who have been invited to visit ARCOmadrid. And the invited journalist programme, organised in partnership with Turespaña, with the participation of around 40 international journalists, will increase coverage of the Fair in the world's most relevant media.
Major exhibitions in Madrid
Art centres and museums join with ARCOmadrid to make the Spanish capital the international epicentre of art in February, with a cluster of exhibitions which can be visited in Madrid alongside the Fair. This month, the city's museums and art centres offer the best of their exhibition programmes. These include three important exhibitions from private collections: the Cisneros Collection, at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía; the Cranford Collection at the Banco Santander Foundation and the Casa de Alba Collection at CentroCentro. These will be joined by new exhibition spaces such as those of the Telefónica Foundation and wonderful solo shows by Cristina Iglesias and Heimo Zobernig.
Also, for each day of the Fair, ARCOmadrid has prepared a schedule of activities for its guests and visitors to enjoy, AfterARCO, making Madrid, already rich in leisure activities, an unmissable destination in February.
ARCO Collect online is the highlight of the Fair's new technological features
In this edition, ARCOmadrid has introduced some new technological initiatives, with the creation of an online art market and the launch of a discussion forum.
One of the most important new features at ARCOmadrid is the launch of ARCO Collect online, a virtual sales platform in partnership with Paddle 8, which from 7 to 24 February will offer a selection of more than 1,000 works of art from the galleries taking part in the Fair, priced up to 5,000 euros. It also has a physical space in Hall 10, where some of the works available online, selected by the curator Tania Pardo, will be on show.
This online art sales initiative is complemented offline by the free in-person advice service offered by ARCOmadrid for starting a collection or purchasing works of art. . The First Collectors programme, co-ordinated by Elisa Hernando from the consulting firm Arte Global, offers support for all visitors to the Fair who need advice on choosing and acquiring works at ARCOmadrid.
Another technological innovation is the use of BiDi codes to point out the highlighted artists of each gallery. This system lets the public find out more about the career and body of work of artists of different generations who, thanks to a particular characteristic or unique quality, have been selected by the participating galleries as their “highlighted artists” at the Fair, while also discovering emerging talents or rediscovering more established artists.
As in the previous edition, the Fair publishes a booklet with information on the highlighted artists, including their careers and a selection of their latest projects. This edition complements the official ARCOmadrid catalogue, which this year is offered as a navigable app which can be consulted with any mobile device or tablet.
The Fair completes its digital services with the launch of ARCO Bloggers (www.arcobloggers.com), a collaborative online publishing experiment, conceived and co-ordinated by Roberta Bosco and Stefano Caldana. With this project, ARCOmadrid supports a new discussion forum for the art industry, with the most influential Spanish and international contemporary art bloggers contributing their content and opinions. Since last autumn, ARCO Bloggers has promoted online analysis and discussion while combining analogue and digital platforms.
This experiment will also have a meeting point in real life on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 February with the ARCO Bloggers Forum, titled “Contemporary art: online tools and strategies”, with the participation of Spain's leading contemporary art bloggers and international tastemakers with an outstanding online presence and activity.
The online art press will also have a leading role in this edition. Eight digital magazines have a dedicated space where they can meet their readers and present their editorial proposals. As well as these publications, 42 Spanish and international art magazines will be present, and two bookshops, Laie and Taschen, offering the latest art books.
ARCOmadrid, socially committed
The potential of the Fair for publicity and communication will once again be made available to social and cultural initiatives. For the second year, the Fair is supporting the ARCOkids project through the Pequeño Deseo Foundation, which works to make dreams come true for children with chronic or terminal illnesses. The ARCOkids workshops, this year sponsored by DKV Seguros, will be held in Hall 10, where participating children can take part in the collective creation of a work of art using recycled materials.
A maximum of 30 children can take part in each workshop, for a donation of €40. Each child's ticket will include a free adult ticket to visit ARCOmadrid on 16 or 17 February. Also, one of these workshops, on the morning of Friday 15 February, will be for people with disabilities, beneficiaries of the DKV Integralia Foundation.
Another initiative is by the ONCE Foundation (Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles) which has a space in Hall 8 to show the work "Polvo de avispas", a work in progress by the Malaga artist David Escalona, which was recognised by the Honour Committee of the ONCE Foundation 4th Contemporary Art Biennial.
These projects will be joined by the Balia Foundation, which for more than a decade has been carrying out social and educational care and prevention projects for children at risk of social exclusion, and their families. The Foundation will be present at the Fair to inform visitors and professionals about the charity auction it is organising for May 20, the profits from which will go to support children at risk of social exclusion.
ARCO Foundation Platform Lunch
Meanwhile, the ARCO Foundation, a non-profit organisation which, since 1987, has dedicated its assets to promoting contemporary art and which will allocate funds to acquiring works of art for its collection, is organising the Platform Lunch at the Fair on 14 February. This meeting of collectors, experts and art lovers will enable the continued expansion of the Foundation's holdings with the advice of Miguel Von Hafe Pérez, director of the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela; Glòria Picazo, director of the Centro de Arte La Panera, Lérida; Ferran Barenblit, director of the Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo, Madrid, and Yolanda Romero, director of the Centro José Guerrero, Granada.
To help introduce Spanish artists to the international attendees, ARCOmadrid, in partnership with Acción Cultural Española AC/E and with the co-ordination of Hablar en Arte, offers curators and other guests a special service focusing on encouraging the promotion and dissemination of the contemporary Spanish art represented in different galleries at the Fair.
