comunicato stampa

Robert Filliou (1929 - 1987), according to whom the connection between poetry and art is the most important achievement of the modern age, can hardly be confined to a specific artistic medium. The author of plays and action poetry began to work visually in the 60s.

His 'Suspense Poems', flexible object collages, developed into multi-part pieces of wall art based on the principles of equivalence and exchange.

Filliou used the 'principle of equivalence' - the principle of the equality in value of the well-done, the badly-done and the not-done - as a conceptional tool and thus broke up any kind of contradistinction. His 'research', consisting of groups of works on the subjects of origin, astrology and future, is hence less about providing a scientific analysis of causal relations than about an 'intuitive understanding' of the world. The fact that he included non-western cultures and dealt with socio-political subjects testifies a universal way of thinking which goes beyond manifesting itself artistically in the 'principle of poetic economy'.

A member of the Fluxus movement, Filliou was active in France, Denmark, Germany and beyond. Throughout his life he refused to take part in the 'star cult' and placed emphasis on joint works rather than claiming sole authorship. While he lived in Düsseldorf (1969 - 1973), he had close connections with Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Dieter Roth and Daniel Spoerri, which manifested itself in a vivid artistic exchange leading on occasion to producing joint works.

The exhibition presents principal works stemming from museums and private collections world-wide, as well as the entire cinematic oeuvre, installations and work series ('Principe d'Equivalence', 'Recherche sur l'Origine', 'Eins. Un. One', 'Joint works'), accompanied by a comprehensive documentation. Many works are being presented to the public for the first time.
