VOLTA NY accents its debut in SoHo - featuring 95 galleries representing artists from 38 nations - with an array of special programming and presentations.
Several exhibitors stage site-specific projects in addition to their booth presentations. On 82MERCER's ground floor, Halsey McKay Gallery (East Hampton) contrasts Timothy Bergstrom's mixed-media Glound canvases with resin and Plexiglas sculptures by David Kennedy Cutler, echoing his industrial Greenpoint neighborhood. Upstairs, HilgerBROTKunsthalle (Vienna) positions the installation Grounds for Standing and Understanding by Babak Golkar (who was shortlisted for The Victoria and Albert Museum's Jameel Prize) adjacent to abstracted urban scenes by their showcase artist Miha Strukelj, Slovenia's representing artist in the 2009 Venice Biennale.

Daniel Rothbart (Galerie Depardieu, Nice) unveils his performance Invisible Ablutions on Saturday afternoon at the fair. He collaborates with Brooklyn-based choreographer Jessica Harris, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's 2012 Graduate Arts Scholarship recipient, who manifests a temporary emotional context to Rothbart's sculptural vessels in a meditative, task-driven dance. ARTPORT_making waves (New York/Valencia/Zurich), an international arts organization attuned to environmental issues and globalized artistic discourse, presents Anita Glesta's WATERSHED project, an interactive display referencing our historic, complicated ties to water. Her commissioned multichannel video installation Cycle Interrupted was shown at COP15, the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference (Copenhagen) and COP16 (CancĂșn, 2010).

VOLTA NY's talks programming echoes the fair's eclectic energy. Featured this year include: 'On Abstraction' with VOLTA NY exhibiting artists Christine Frerichs (gallery km, Santa Monica), Kadar Brock (The Hole NYC and VIGO Gallery, London), Regina Scully (C24 Gallery, New York), and William Bradley (EB&Flow, London), moderated by VOLTA Press Manager Brian Fee; ARC Magazine's roundtable discussion 'Curtailing Anxieties 1: Boundaries of defining art in the Caribbean', moderated by Editor-in-Chief Holly Bynoe (St. Vincent and the Grenadines) and artist/writer Charles Campbell (Jamaica/Canada) and featuring artists Heino Schmid (Popopstudios, Nassau) and Christopher Cozier (Trinidad) plus Director of Bermuda National Gallery Lisa Howie (Bermuda) and Michelle Joan Wilkinson, Ph.D. (Guyana/USA, Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture in Baltimore, MD); Hung Liu (Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco) and Ingrid Dudek (Vice President at Christie's, Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art Division) discuss Liu's xiaorenshu meta-exhibition at the fair; Natasha Rottman, Director of Operations at Collectrium, leads an exploration on how new technology empowers savvy art collectors; and 'The Next 10,000 Years of Creation', a conversation with TODAY IS THE DAY founder and artist Noritoshi Hirakawa, David A. Ross (Chair of the Department of Art Practice at SVA), and Arthur Ou (Director, BFA Photography, at Parsons) on elevating people's consciousness through art, music, and performance.

ARC Magazine, a not-for-profit biannual visual arts publication based in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, is this year's Main Media Partner and engages visitors with discourse on pan-Caribbean visual arts and culture. In their dedicated booth, ARC Magazine features works from Joscelyn Gardner's (Barbados/Canada) Creole Portraits III series and paintings by Elizabeth Colomba (Martinique), plus a selection of artists' monographs. The 2013 fair's Exclusive Technology Sponsor Collectrium has created VOLTA-branded iPhone and iPad apps for the fair - powerful tools allowing discerning collectors a second, considered look at artwork that caught their eye. Plus, Collectrium digitizes the VOLTA NY catalogue into a dynamic, interactive platform.

VOLTA NY gratefully acknowledges its 2013 Primary Hotel Partner, The James New York.
