Exhibitions and Performances in Sound Art
Innovative, experimental and challenging, IMA in collaboration with Elision, presents Particle Moves, a series of exhibitions and performances by established local and international sound artists, opening Thursday July 31 at 6:00 (until August 30). Particle Moves features high-tech installations by Andrew Kettle, lowkey+nude (Michael Hogg and Clare McGrogan) and Ed Osborn and a Screening Program by Lawrence English. Internationally renowned artist Ed Osborn also collaborated with Elision for two performances, Friday 25 July & Saturday 26 July.
From rumbling fans to delicate feedback networks Osborn works with ensemble members (Daryl Buckley, Michael Hewes, Tim O'Dwyer and Ben Marks) for these performances to create an immersive sound/performance environment using gadgets and ‘cheap’ technologies.
Audiences will also be immersed in sound by each of the installations in the gallery spaces. In an audio composition lasting 521 hours Andrew Kettle manipulates astronomical data to create a "Music of Spheres" in Sol's Violin. Encompassing the solar system in a single exhibit each planet is given it's own unique sound quality. lowkey+nude invite you to lounge in the gallery and experience a multi-disciplinary installation incorporating design, architecture, poetry, spoken word and electronic music. Sound Lounge's aural works vary from ambient, abstract works to dance floor oriented pieces. In a blur of images Ed Osborn highlights not only the optical distortion that the speed of vehicles create in his video installation Arena, but a mapping of desire onto these machines and what they represent.
TREATMENT: SCREENING PROGRAM
With thanks to guest curator Lawrence English the IMA Screening Room is home to an engaging screening program for the duration of Particle Moves featuring Scanner &Matiasek, Philip Brophy, I/O and Loyd Barrett.
Scanner & Matiasek use decelerated sounds of bats flying through cities and landscapes to create Echo Days, an unsettling composition that echoes throughout the space. In sync with every on-screen movement Philip Brophy replaces audio tracks from big-budget film clips with monstrous alien sounds. Evaporated Music leaves us with only the grossly emotional imagery form artists such as Billy Joel and Celine Dion. I/O manipulates and reconstructs the incidental aspects of local residents’ lives alluding to an environment where nothing remains as it was in Transit and Loyd Barrett invites audiences to find something previously unseen in his processed media The Drift.
All of the artists in this program draw on extensive experiences and successes. Ed Osborn is the recipient of numerous awards including an Artist-in-Berlin Stipendium and a Guggenheim Fellowship and has performed, exhibited, lectured and held residencies throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South America. He will be resident at the IMA three weeks prior to the Particle Moves performances.
