Fictitious Possibilities. A portrait shows how people chose to be represented. Living in this digital age however, unflattering images are deleted, and we only get to see perfection.
Artist Genieve Figgis has been painting portraits for over 12 years and holds a Masters and Bachelor Degree in Fine Art Painting from NCAD. The artist has a fascination with people and is interested in how they present themselves. Her work has always been about the façade of people.
A portrait shows how people chose to be represented. Living in this digital age however, unflattering images are deleted, and we only get to see perfection. In her work, Figgis engages with what is hidden and feels this to be much more interesting. The work is in response to the idea of portraiture drawing from contemporary and historical resources where the truths are buried and images are fictionalised. The artist loves the opportunity that portrait offers, with its history and its spectacle. Choosing to paint on frame mounted board, the wooden stage becomes a herald for which the narcissism of portraiture allows the artist to manoeuvre the paint. This production of image is an attempt to describe the spectacle.
Having a keen interest in historical drama and theatre, Figgis reads historical fiction novels and loves nothing more than a trip to the National Gallery. Citing it as a place where you can step back in time and experience images from the past, the past being a safer place to be.
