An exhibition showcasing new works by emerging contemporary artists Adam Green and Sheena Russell. Working respectively with photography and painting, each artist draws on the genre of portraiture as a starting point for their work. However, the artists are not attempting to lay bare the inner life of the individual, they choose instead to reflect more accurately upon the status of the portrait as a site of interaction between self and society.

The Tricycle Gallery is proud to present BESIDE MYSELF: an exhibition showcasing new works by emerging contemporary artists Adam Green and Sheena Russell.
Working respectively with photography and painting, each artist draws on the genre of portraiture as a starting point for their work. However, the artists are not attempting
to lay bare the inner life of the individual, they choose instead to reflect more accurately upon the status of the portrait as a site of interaction between self and society.
Presenting their works in a structured series enables each artist to bring the physiognomy of the human face in to play as an enigmatic narrative of the social condition.
Although each artist offers their own distinct commentary on established conventions of the portrait image, the use of narrative highlights a tension running throughout the
exhibition between the private and public uses of the portrait.
Sheena Russell's work is strongly influenced by popular culture. In these works she uses the melodramatic visual language of comic books such as 'Tales from the Crypt' in order to capture a moment of overwhelming emotion, such as rage, fear, sadness or relief. The artist's work underlines the transience of mood through the flow, movement and energy, which can only be caught in 'stills'.
Sheena Russell graduated with a BA from Glasgow School of Art in 1997.
Adam Green uses the conventions of large format studio portrait photography to present a series of conversations occurring between fathers and their children. Through
these silent, yet animated verbal exchanges the artist offers a new way of reflecting on the cultural positioning of the family and on the evolving role of the father figure.
Adam Green graduated with an MA in Photographic studies from the University of Westminster in 2001.
Since graduating, both artists have exhibited nationally and internationally.
