Two exhibitions

Hilger Contemporary, Wien

First View - A First Overview

In the 33rd year of the Gallery's existence, some changes have become necessary - many artists who have been associated with the Gallery for many years have become Austrian classics in the meantime and have written a major chapter in Austrian art history; they need to be put into context with their contemporaries and the main artists of reference in Austria and abroad, just as they need more time to be shown in an optimum fashion and to be seen by all interested persons.

At the same time, after eight years of cooperation with Siemens at the artLab, a number of young artists from Austria and the transition countries have become contemporaries. The interest taken by my gallery, as well as by my partners, in photography and new international artists has become a reality, and artists, who had their first exhibitions at the Gallery some 13 or 14 years ago, have become recognized representatives of contemporary art - so, to give more attention to these artists, without reducing any of the attention paid to the well-established artists of the Gallery, nor to classical modern art, we began to look for logical ways to expand, and with a stroke of good luck we succeeded in finding a street-level facility, right below our well-established premises. Thanks to the understanding shown by the building owners, it has become possible to present to you henceforth at Hilger Contemporary exhibitions of works by artists such as, for example, ANTON HENNING (first exhibition with us in 1989) JOSEF FELIX MÃœLLER (first exhibition with us in 1990) BERNHARD MARTIN (first exhibition with us in 1996), as well as photographic work by RENATA POLJAK (HR), ERIK BINDER (SL), SIEGLIND GABRIEL, as well as works by ANDREAS LEIKAUF, SEBASTIAN WEISSENBACHER, FELIX MALNIG.

Naked Frames
Leo Zogmayer

One of six frames that have been mounted in the summer of 2003 in and around Krems, 80 km to the west of Vienna, Austria.

Leo Zogmayer produces "naked, icon-less frames", i.e. open, empty pictures. With this, he puts Kasimir Malevich's saying to a radical extreme, who - 90 years ago - called his radical, abstract paintings "naked, frame-less icons".

Leo Zogmayer: "My frames are a counterpoint to the pictures that surround us, that assail us permanently, and that we carry with us in our heads."

Zogmayer creates paradox non-pictures that do not patronize the onlooker, that do not confront him/her with a ready subject.

The irritation that his objects trigger, are meant to break up the hackneyed patterns of perception. No doubt, this is a central element of all art. Whenever such "transmitters" are placed in a public space, i.e. outside the conventional locations for art, such as galleries, museums, etc., they act like acupuncture pricks in the respective social environment.
