From June 8 through August 17, 2013, CAMERA WORK presents the group exhibition, CAMERA WORK rocks«. The self-curated exhibition consists of more than 100 works with a selection of the most famous musicians and bands of the past decades – some of them have never been shown before.
Please be welcomed to experience an artistic photo journey through the history of rock and pop music. You can be looking forward to a special selection of outstanding portraits of the photographic art of over five decades. It features over 100 works by over 50 of the finest, best known and most eccentric musicians and bands in the world, photographed by over 30 representatives of famous classical and contemporary photographic art.
In the exhibition, the viewer can find among others the legendary Beatles series of Richard Avedon, famous portraits of Johnny Cash or Tom Waits by Anton Corbijn, one of the most famous Jimi Hendrix photographs of all time by Gered Mankowitz or a sensual portrait of the artist Sting by Paolo Roversi. Master of self-staging and enfant terribles like the The Rolling Stones - photographed by Sante D'Orazio, Peter Lindbergh, Terry O'Neill and Albert Watson - and Iggy Pop are part of the exhibition, as well as numerous world-famous photographs of David Bowie. Special priority will be given to,Aladdin Sane« - also known as,Mona Lisa of Pop« – by the artist Brian Duffy, who died in 2010. The world-renowned large format portrait of a nearly sold-out edition of 25 is currently also part of the great Bowie exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Contemporary works illustrate the artistic and technical development and change in the visual aesthetics with representations of musicians. For this reason,,CAMERA WORK rocks« shows a modern photomontage in panorama format by Kanye West by the artist Ralph Mecke, a brilliantly-baroque-like staging of Rammstein by the Spanish artist Eugenio Recuenco, works never previously shown by Martin Schoeller and lascivious erotic photographs from Lady Gaga or Rihanna by the artist Ellen von Unwerth.
