Otto Breicha-Prize for Photographic Art 2013
This year the 14th Photography Prize of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg is awarded to photographic artist Matthias Herrmann, who was born in Munich and lives in Vienna. He was professor for "art and photography" at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 2003 - 2011. In his new series of photographs he explores stilllives and images of urban spaces. After ending his career as a ballet dancer, he turned to photography in the 1990s and has been preoccupied with the image of the human body, gender constructions in photography and the self-image as sexually connoted manifestation. From an individual's subjective look at himself, his perspective has expanded and now also includes his environment, the world as reflection plane and his own photography. The exhibition gives a survey of the artist's fascinating, multifacted oeuvre, featuring about 100 small-format works from the last 15 years and approximately 50 large-format photographs from his latest creative period.
