Situation|event

Gasworks Gallery, London

The programme merges the process and product of art making, offering a space for exploration and encouraging experimenting with contemporary forms of live art practice.

comunicato stampa

This summer Gasworks presents a new programme aiming to support the development of art practices with a temporal, social or performative focus.

The programme merges the process and product of art making, offering a space for exploration and encouraging experimenting with contemporary forms of live art practice.

During this 60-day project, Gasworks will host a range of event-based projects, workshops, and performances, by international artists with diverse backgrounds and practices.

In the centre of Situation | Event are Gasworks’ first performance based residencies, chosen through an open call from over 270 submissions.

The selected artists are Alex Cecchetti (Italy), Antoine Davenne (France) and Achim Lengerer (Germany), Marcy Saude (USA) and Alice Theobald (UK).

These artists will develop projects at Gasworks over varying periods of time, ranging from one week to two months. Their working processes will be made visible to the public through a series of interventions, socially engaged projects, performances or other event-based activities.

FULL PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

SITUATION|EVENT LAUNCH NIGHT: PROCESS|MUSIC
THURSDAY 18 JULY, 6.45-9.30pm
Steina and Woody Vasulka, Sarah Rara + Luke Fischbeck (Lucky Dragons), Alice Theobald, Peter Burr and Liam Wright Higgins and Joseph Lewis.

Marking the start of two months of activity, SIT|EV’s inaugural event explores the use of music within contemporary art practice. The event features screenings of works by video-art pioneers Steina and Woody Vasulka, performances from SIT|EV commissioned artist Alice Theobald, contributions from Sarah Rara + Luke Fischbeck (Lucky Dragons), a screening of recent works by Peter Burr and a collaborative performance by Liam Wright Higgins and Joseph Lewis. With a particular focus on how artistic processes can be used as compositional tools, the evening’s activity considers both the legacy of ‘process music’ of the 1960s and how sound and image processing techniques overlap.

ALEX CECCHETTI (ITALY)
THINGYING THAT THING WITH THE THINGUM

FRIDAY 19 – SUNDAY 21 JULY, 7-8pm

Over three days Alex Cecchetti will explore the idea of an ‘exhibition’ where new configuration of works and installations are summoned from the domain of the invisible only to be broken down and created anew. Cecchetti describes the work as ‘a multiple experience of serendipity and simultaneity that tries to reply to one single question: do invisible things see visible things?’

ANTOINE DAVENNE (FRANCE)
PRODUCING LINES
Limited Places - Booking Essential. Email booking@gasworks.org.uk or call 020 7587 5202 to reserve your place

WEDNESDAY 24, SATURDAY 27, TUESDAY 30 JULY AND FRIDAY 2 AUGUST, 7-8pm

Working with a small group of UK based performers and collaborators, Antoine Davenne creates an evolving performance, with no clear beginning nor end. Illustrating work-in-progress, the public events are individual presentations that are undetermined in form and sit somewhere between rehearsals and staged performances. Centring on the topic of ‘witness’ - language and sound, Davenne explores the complex links between performance and documentation and questions the visual presentation of the ‘live’.

MARCY SAUDE (USA)
THE COUNTER & LOCATION INSTRUCTIONS

SATURDAY 10 AUGUST, 6pm

Marcy Saude presents The Counter, an expanded cinema presentation of a video work-in-progress. Utilising super 8 and slide projections, recorded sound and live narration, it concerns numbers and their relationship to object typologies and processes of quantification and possession. The Counter is screened alongside Location Instructions, a site-specific video installation project constructed from material filmed over the days prior the screening, created in response to the specific landscape of London and the locality of Gasworks.

ALICE THEOBALD (UK)
THEY KEEP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH! - AN OPERETTA OF SORTS

SUNDAY 18 AUGUST, 6pm

Alice Theobald creates a series of vignettes to contribute towards the making of They Keep Putting Words in My Mouth performance and video. As a nod at the longstanding relationship between 'The Artist' and 'The Therapist', Theobald is working with a trainee counsellor to develop a series of part scripted, part directed, part improvised pseudo-counselling-sessions. Throughout these sessions there is a particular focus on language and communication and the noise and nervousness of something that is live or off-the-cuff, revealing the relationship between interior and exterior dialogues

ACHIM LENGERER (GERMANY)
THE TROTSKY REHEARSAL

Open workshop and public rehearsals - The Trotsky Rehearsals
MONDAY 19 AUGUST – THURSDAY 5 SEPTEMBER, 2-5pm DAILY

Listening session Trotsky in Exile, BBC radio play, November 1970.
THURSDAY 22 AUGUST, 7pm

Discussion "Trotsky in Exile"
THURSDAY 29 AUGUST, 7pm

Public Dress Rehearsal + Launch of the respective publication- Scriptings#33
THURSDAY 5 SEPTEMBER, 7pm

The Trotsky Rehearsal is based on Achim Lengerer's ongoing research regarding the ‘rehearsal’ as an artistic method as well as socio-political format. Through open public rehearsals the artist, together with guests, will present and perform various historical documents concerning the controversial reception of the play Trotsky in Exile by Peter Weiss (1970). The fragile potential of the unresolved, the unfinished, the ‘in-the-making’, which identifies the rehearsal as a format, is laid open and performed with or in front of a public in order to question Weiss' differentiation between active political engagement, versus the staging of topics to activate contemplation on politics.

CLOSING WEEKEND

DISCUSSION EVENT: MARIO PFEIFER
DIALOGUE SITUATION
SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER, 5pm
For SIT|EV, resident artist Mario Pfeifer develops a participatory discussion event featuring a panel of keynote speakers from diverse backgrounds, in which the audience will be invited to speak on a current societal dispute. This format acts as a device by which the artist reflects upon and challenges his own working processes. Pfeifer is interested in how the staging of public events both high¬lights and confirms the separation between the roles of audience and speaker. The artist will propose a theme and a structural set of rules to which the invited keynote speaker as well as the audience will perform or react.
