comunicato stampa

For the spring residency, Casino Luxembourg welcomed the Treacle collective (Susanne Kudielka and Kaspar Wimberley). During their stay, the artists developed the The Changing of the Guard project, which will take shape in various parts. An exhibition will be shown in the "Aquarium" of Casino Luxembourg until 15 September and, during the summer season, the public area of Luxembourg City centre will host various performances. Furthermore, a publication (on the shelves in autumn 2013) will document the entire Treacle residency project.

Waiting for something to happen / The magician
Susanne Kudielka and Kaspar Wimberley work on an international level and define themselves as interventionists and performers. Specialised in art in public spaces, they have a lively interest in everything to do with interactions with the public as well as in new kinds of artistic collaborations. Generally, their artistic starting point begins with an observation phase of a given place; from here, an analytical dialogue follows in reaction to the architectural, socio-political, geographical and historical contexts. The artists summarise their impressions and reflections that they have developed during their stay - many reference points for the realisation of their residency project - and explain them as follows:

Luxembourg is surrounded (and marked) by the vestiges of the former fortress which used to assure the protection of the city, and which today serves as tourist attraction points. The tourists admire this landscape: the same places where soldiers from times past stood on guard today resemble cinema scenes. After the fortress was dismantled, banks invaded the City centre. Like so many castles within fortresses, these banks keep, according to banking secrecy precepts, the treasures of their clients: bank accounts, shares, savings and investments. These new "fortresses", furnished with generous glass façades, seem to overflow with optimism. Neighbouring streets are marked by summer festivities and another luxury store opens its doors in the pedestrian area. However, on the contrary to what we've experienced in Luxembourg, we have read the papers. These new "fortresses", will they be dismantled? Is it the end? The changing of the guard? And then what? The projects that we undertook during our stay in Luxembourg deal with the notions of temporality and fragility, of money and financial security, of "the end" and what will happen behind the scenes.

The "Aquarium" of Casino Luxembourg has been transformed by Susanne Kudielka and Kaspar Wimberley into a waiting room where visitors are invited "to wait for something to happen". Visitors are received by a magician in residency for a private audience. Other performances are planned in the City centre during the summer months.
