PLAY! Recapturing the Radical Imagination
Throughout modern history artists have used the hidden workings and the agency of play to push boundaries and change norms, to render language delirious and experiment with form, and to insert art into a variety of narratives, ranging from the personal and social to the critical, political and historical. But in our globalised world what seems to be at a constant risk of failing is the very human imagination. New ground for reclaiming the radical imagination needs to open up and alternative ways of thinking and living need to be created. Art remains one of the last frontiers where creative playfulness and activism, social experiment and philosophical deliberation can meet uninhibitedly and spark off such alternatives.

For Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art 2013 we set out to explore artistic and curatorial strategies that aim at recapturing the radical imagination in our post-industrial era of late capitalism. In this framework, GIBCA 2013 will focus on curatorial and artistic approaches that use the potential and ambivalence of the notion of play to open up new ground for imagining alternative realities that subvert the rules and logic of the everyday.

The subtitle of GIBCA 2013 borrows inspiration from the famous slogan by David Graeber—the anarchist and activist, who was one of the leaders of the Occupy movement in NY. In using the potential of assembly to occupy not merely a city square but also the radical imagination, he envisioned the creation of a new space, a space to explore, to desire, to map and create. Taking this notion to task, GIBCA 2013 will shift away from the conventional group exhibition and will instead be structured around a number of “play-grounds”, curated by a selection of artists and curators. Engaging with multiple aspects of the concept of play, such as fiction and theatricality, mimesis and methexis, ritual and rehearsal, the different platforms will explore the diverse ways in which art is inserted into a variety of narratives, ranging from the personal and social to the critical and historical.

GIBCA Extended:

GIBCA Extended is a collaboration between Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art and the local art life in the region of Västra Götaland. This year GIBCA Extended consists of 45 productions throughout the region. They are all working with the common theme Play! Recapturing the Radical Imagination but showing the width, diversity and creativity found in contemporary art.

Among the productions, everything from literature to performance, solo and collaborative exhibitions, video works, interactive installations and photography, is presented. The arenas also provide a wide program of talks and workshops engaging in local issues and contemporary art.
Leisure, Discipline and Punishment

LDP is an EU supported collaboration between Contour Biennial, Mechelen, GIBCA, Liverpool Biennial and Lubljana Biennial of Graphic Art. The exhibition is presented in locations where people live, work, relax etc. The idea is to look at different social spaces that people visit for pleasure and necessity or where they are placed by force. The artists respond to the meaning of these places, adding new layers of content and form.

The Biennial takes place every other year since 2001. Since 2006, Röda Sten Konsthall has been the main organizer, commissioned by the city of Göteborg's Cultural Affairs commitee.

GIBCA 2013 - Sweden’s International Art Biennial, is organized by Röda Sten
