Andy Warhol
Drawings from the 1950s
14.09. - 17.11.2013
Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München in the Pinakothek der Moderne
Executed in the most varied techniques, the nearly 180
graphic works on view here are on loan from Daniel Blau, as well as other private
collectors. The exhibition was previously presented to great acclaim at the
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek and at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
An extensive group of the artist's drawings that dated from the 1950's, Warhol's
early period in New York, was found in Andy Warhol's estate in 2011. Warhol had
already laid the foundations of his entire later career in these works. We encounter
portraits, flowers, protesters, guns, and automobile accidents, as well as famous
figures.
The drawings reveal an artist who not only visually recorded the world around him,
but who also reflected it as an image. Warhol often found his imagery in the world
of street photography, although he transformed its realism into specific emblems.
Early on, we discover his astonishing ability to transfer external reality into
something iconic.
The works are characterized by an experimental and innovative
spirit. Warhol makes use here of repetitive, conceptual mechanisms, in which the
fragmentary and additive, as well as tracing and reproducing processes, assume an
artistic importance. They furthermore exhibit the seed of the artist's preoccupation
- beginning in the 1960s - with the printmaking technique of silk screening, with
which the artist would gain international fame.
The Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München recently acquired an important drawing
from the selection presented with funds from PIN. Freunde der Pinakothek der
Moderne.

AFRITECTURE
Building Social Change
14 Sept. 2013 – 12 Jan. 2014
Architekturmuseum der TU München at the Pinakothek der Moderne
Contemporary architectural practice in Africa is witness to many new and
innovative approaches in the area of socially committed building:
schools, nursery schools, marketplaces, hospitals, cultural centers, sports
facilities and assembly halls. It is these public buildings and commonly
used spaces in particular where signs of new utility and architectural
concepts are made manifest. In many cases, future users are directly
involved in the design and building processes. In addition to the use of the
latest technology many of the construction projects are being developed
with local materials and resume dormant building traditions.
In its exhibition »AFRITECTURE – Building Social Change« the
Architekturmuseum der TU München will shed a spotlight on those
projects, with a particular emphasis on those that have been initiated by
architects and whose conceptualization incorporates global relationships
in addition to those of local culture and individual social groups. By taking
into account ecological, economic and social aspects several architects
have developed sustainable approaches and solutions to some of the
continent’s most pressing design challenges. The exhibition comprises
twenty-eight projects from ten countries within Subsaharan Africa,
including Kenya, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and South Africa. All projects have
been developed since the turn of the millenium and have been planned by
African as well as European and North American architects. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive supporting program with
lectures and a full day symposium which will address central aspects of
the exhibition, including Africa’s urbanization, participation and questions
of architectural identity. There will be a catalogue both in German and
English by Hatje Cantz publishers.

MOROCCAN CARPETS AND MODERN ART
14.09.2013–05.01.2014
Die Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum Munich
As an upbeat, Die Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum
Munich will be exhibiting one the of the world's most important collections
of carpets made by Moroccan nomads - »a far-reaching subject that sends
out a strong signal at the reopening«. (Florian Hufnagl, Director, Die Neue
Sammlung)
In the early 20th century, Moroccan carpets fascinated artists such as Paul
Klee and Le Corbusier and today bring images of Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly
or Sean Scully to mind. In other words, an enquiry into the Islamically
influenced culture of North Africa in general and carpets from Morocco in
particular leads us to the roots of European avant-garde art. The Islamic
prohibition on depictions of the human being led among the Maghreb
Berbers to a radical form of abstraction and a completely free and in our
eyes very modern approach to color and shape. In the age of globalization
and the increasing dominance of purely Western notions, on the one hand,
and the radicalization of Islam, on the other, it is so very important to focus
on the intellectual linkages and cultural interchange between the Orient and
the Occident.
The exhibition will center on the collection of Munich architect Professor
Jürgen Adam. He assembled it himself down through the decades in
Morocco – and it is one of the most important private collections of
Moroccan nomad carpets the world over. Especially in the Pinakothek der
Moderne the theme admirably highlights the intrinsic links between the
different art genres that lay the foundations for the concept underlying this
interdisciplinary museum, which is truly unique worldwide. The exhibition is supported by PIN. Freunde der Pinakothek der Moderne
e.V. and Jan Fischer. The book has been produced with the generous
support of Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung.
An exhibition by Die Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum
Munich
On the occasion of the reopening of the Pinakothek der Moderne on September 14, free
admission to the entire museum is being granted to all visitors.
