Il 24 Settembre la Ermanno Tedeschi Gallery di Roma riaprirà la stagione espositiva con una mostra dell’artista israeliano Shaul Knaz, per la prima volta in Italia. Artista grafico cresciuto nel Kibbutz, ha sempre creduto in un’arte che prendesse in considerazione la comunità, trasmettendo visivamente i segni della vita, i ricordi, la natura.

Knaz prende ciò che ha intorno – persone, oggetti, azioni – e lo traduce in un dizionario abbreviato di termini che include figure umane rappresentative, oggetti familiari e, spesso, parole e stralci di frasi.

Le sue opere traboccano di immagini disposte casualmente, che sembrano galleggiare su di una superficie senza limiti spaziali, immagini che talvolta ripete con infinite varianti quasi a creare un dipinto murale primitivo. Nella tela non c’è spazio per il vuoto: tutto rappresenta la sua vita, una vita fatta di ricordi, di frutteti così com’erano, del Kibbutz di un tempo, di un esercito che era una volta.

Queste rappresentazioni trasmettono messaggi contrastanti della condizione umana: l’unità del gruppo in mezzo a una società brulicante di persone in contrapposizione all’individuo che, inghiottito dalla folla, è solo, alienato, alla ricerca di piaceri momentanei. Quello che sembra cercare Knaz nella sua pittura è un non facile equilibrio tra gli opposti. Figure centrali delle sue opere sono l’uomo e la donna, raffigurati spesso con gli stereotipi del fucile e del bambino in grembo, rappresentano il bisogno umano di connessione che sembra sempre impedito da una forza invisibile.

“Se dovessi descrivermi, direi che quello che cerco di fare è un’arte sociale, non un’arte politica, cerco di contemplare la gente in un mondo sempre più pieno di tentazioni, nel quale abbiamo difficoltà a mantenere la nostra libertà” (Shaul Knaz).

On September 24th, Ermanno Tedeschi Gallery in Rome will open its exhibition season displaying the works of the Israeli artist Shaul Knaz, for the first time in Italy. Artist Shaul Knaz grew up on a Kibbutz. He has always believed in art that stems from his community, visualizing signs of life, memories and nature. Knaz reflects his immediate surroundings – people, objects, actions – and translates them into an abridged dictionary of terms that include_ representational human figures, familiar everyday objects, and sometimes words or parts of sentences.

His works burst with casually arranged images, that seem to float on an infinite surface, images that he often repeats with various modifications in order to create a kind of primitive wall painting. No space is meaningless: everything represents his life, a life made of memories, of orchards that once were, an army that once was, a kibbutz that once was. These images convey the conflicting messages of the human condition: unity within a group, ___ being one among many in the midst of a community teeming with people, and alienation of the individual who, as if swallowed up by the crowd, is alone, seeking momentary pleasures.

The main characters in his works are a man and a woman - one at times bearing a rifle, the other a child in her womb – representing the basic human urge to connect, which seems always prevented by some unseen force.

“If I had to categorize myself, I would say that what I try to do is social art. Not a political but a social art, an attempt to contemplate the situation that people are up against in a free world that has more temptations than ever. A world in which we have unlimited options and have to protect ourselves against this overwhelming and threatening freedom” (Shaul Knaz).
