Note from the artist about the exhibition “hybrideâ€
“Hybride naturally emerged following my move from Australia to Singapore, when I was suddenly confronted with a completely new environment and its strong Asian influence. I had to redefine my place in this new surrounding, questioning myself about my identity. New roots were growing, in a new soil. What was emerging from that?
The primal elements of the natural world began to undergo changes. In this new place, with all its new languages, Hybride started to take shape. Organic-like forms that are appearing in this body of works, at the border of material and immaterial, question our inner and outer perceptions. The use of layers and transparency always relates to the hidden world, physical and psychological, tangible and illusory. The ‘unseen’ belongs to the ‘seen’, the present invites the past and opens the mind to new visions.
The element of time is a very strong component of my work. Repetitively the lines are cursing the canvas, scratching it. Tessera by tessera the experience of growing and eroding takes form. All my mind and body engage in the artwork. The lines and the action of scratching become the metaphor as well as the reality of the passing of time. The pattern becomes a temporal mark, growing, searching and disappearing. Nothing is fixed, like the world around me, my work is the witness of a continual flux originating in its intimate vibration.
