Amy Shuckburgh's forthcoming show 'Motion Pictures' features work that combines the glamour and melodrama of classic Hollywood film with kitsch still life. Amy frames images of cinematic icons past and present, and photographs of her personal friends posing as screen idols in fantastical scenes, decorated with vibrantly painted fruits and jewels.
She plays with iconography from popular culture, layering images to create new narratives. Within the simulated scenarios she explores familiar gender roles and social values. Reflecting on traditional ideas of femininity, Amy's paintings parody our aspirations and desires for fame, beauty and perfection. She offers the viewer the possibility of escape from reality whilst raising questions about the meaning and veracity of the original films which have inspired her.
Amy's work fuses a variety of media, using bold strokes of oil paint over the clean, graphic edges of the photographic image, or incorporating swatches of fabric, scattered glitter or sequins. Amy has exhibited extensively in Britain, America and Australia. Her previous five solo exhibitions in Britain have generated immense interest amongst collectors and press.
