For Encouragement to Museum

Collection of the Lodz association for the encouragement of fine arts. Currently it includes almost seventy pieces, with strong ties to the city, in a dialogue with the avant-garde heritage and with the Muzeum Sztuki collection.
The exhibition presents the collection accumulated by Łódź association for the encouragement of fine arts from the moment the society was established in 2004 to the present day. The society has been gathering the pieces for their collection so that they correspond with the collection of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and supplement it. The result of this is a uniquely consistent collection.
Łódź association for the encouragement of fine arts was established in 2004 as a response to the Ministry of Culture programme "Znaki Czasu” [Signs of the Times]. The programme was to be an encouragement to create regional, civic societies compiling collections of contemporary art. The initiator of the idea was the minister in office – Waldemar Dąbrowski. The collections were financed by sponsors and from the ministry’s resources. As a result, most provinces saw the creation of the so-called “Zachęty” [≈incentives, ‘encouragements’] – Association For he Encouragement of Fine Arts.
The members of Łódź association for the encouragement of fine arts found themselves in a particular situation: the collection was to be created in a city with a museum, the only museum in Poland then, that had been accumulating the works of modern and contemporary art for over 70 years. The society’s objective was shaping a collection that would supplement the existing one, developing and adding the threads that were important in the Muzeum collection. A group of experts was invited to create the collection. It included art critics and historians: Dorota Jarecka, Dorota Monkiewicz, Maria Morzuch, Grzegorz Musiał, Paweł Sosnowski, and Jarosław Suchan (since 2007).
The first edition of the programme (2005-2006) 47 works were bought for the collection. They included pieces with strong ties to Łódź (Artur Chrzanowski, Światło ze wschodu [Light from the East]; Elżbieta Jabłońska, cykl Naruszenie [Disturbance series]), entering a dialogue with the avant-garde heritage (Cezary Bodzianowski, Unik [Duck]; Józef Robakowski, Attention: Light), with a musem as an institution (Azorro, Wszystko już było [Everything’s Been Done]), and with the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź collection (Łódź Kaliska, Śniadanie w muzeum [Breakfast at the Museum]).
Currently the collection includes almost seventy pieces. The artists whose works have been chosen for the collection are Azorro group, Krzysztof Bednarski, Cezary Bodzianowski, Bogna Burska, Agnieszka Chojnacka, Artur Chrzanowski, Tomasz Ciecierski, Stanisław Dróżdż, Elżbieta Jabłońska, Zuzanna Janin, Igor Krenz, Zofia Kulik, Robert Kuśmirowski, Konrad Kuzyszyn, Przemysław Kwiek, Natalia Lach-Lachowicz, Wojciech Leder, Dominik Lejman, Zbigniew Libera, Łódź Kaliska group, Katarzyna Kozyra, Robert Maciejuk, Magdalena Moskwa, Jacek Niegoda, Anna Orlikowska, Leszek Paul, Wiktor Polak, Karol Radziszewski, Joanna Rajkowska, Józef Robakowski, Jadwiga Sawicka, Chief Judge group, Janek Simon, Paweł Susid, Grzegorz Sztwiertnia, Twożywo group, Ryszard Waśko, Ewa Zarzycka, Alicja Żebrowska.
In 2008 a cooperation agreement was signed by the society and Muzeum Sztuki in Łodź with the seat of the former moved to the Museum building. Due to the fact that the programme for the years 2004–2013 is coming to an end, Łódź association for the encouragement of fine arts is finalising its activities with regards to constructing the collection and declares to donate the collected works to Muzeum Sztuki.
On this occasion the collection will be exhibited at Muzeum Sztuki. It is accompanied by a bilingual (Polish-English) catalogue of the Collection of Łódź association for the encouragement of fine arts, which recapitulates the several-years-long activities of the society. The publication is an album containing colour photographs of the works as well as texts about the importance and characteristics of the Collection. Co-publishers of the catalogue are Łódź Association For the Encouragement of Fine Arts and Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź.
The publication has been partially funded from the National Centre for Culture resources as a part of the Culture – Interventions programme ad by the Lodz Special Economic Zone.

Łódź association for the encouragement of fine arts was awarded the ms Award for the year 2012. The Award is given to institutions, companies, media representatives and individuals as a symbol of recognition of their particular support for Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź.
