David Nauggle and Rachel Iberra

Artspace Gallery, Richmond

Workout, a collaborative installation.

comunicato stampa

Richmond, VA-Artspace, located at 6 East Broad Street in downtown Richmond, is pleased to announce its January exhibitions.

Exhibiting in the Main Gallery are David Nauggle and Rachel Iberra, both from Atlanta. WORKOUT, a collaborative installation, explores the genre of documentation. Plagued with a sensitive stomach and mysterious food allergies that have affected his artistic productivity, artist David Nauggle decides to take a proactive stance and test the limits of his system. Over a 45-day project, he documents his everyday dietary habits. Photography and drawings deliver a nauseating account of this experiment. Never having been interested or dedicated enough to stick with an exercise regimen, Rachel Ibarra decides to test her commitment as well as endurance. By attaching two Chinese brushes to a light-tension spring grip which she uses to tone her right forearm (specifically the Extensor Digitorum muscle), she creates a drawing through daily exercise. This 45-day experiment results in one large abstract drawing and two photographs: documentation of the forearm before and after.

Recent Earth Works assembled by local artist and art instructor, Cristian Koshock, will be exhibited in the Helena Davis Gallery. Koshock will be exhibiting face vessels and ceramic works. These recent works, inspired by ancient clay artifacts, have been adapted with modern forms.

Koshock strives to reverence the journey clay takes from its pliable beginning to its enduring finish(es).

Cybele Phillips will be exhibiting in the Skylight Gallery. Her large scale oil paintings capture vivid images recalling abstract landscapes and memories. These expressive paintings use color and form to create a personal, yet expressive language.

The exhibits open Friday, January 2, 2004. The Opening Reception is from 7-10 pm. A second reception will be held Friday, January 16th from 7-10 pm. All exhibits will close Sunday, February 1, 2004. Artspace is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 12 to 4 pm and by appointment.
