comunicato stampa

Esther Schipper is pleased to present Bo Lak, the fifth solo exhibition of Matti Braun.

Matti Braun’s work brings together different artistic traditions, culturally specific materials and history. Apart from large-scale installations, photographic works and sculptures, Braun is best known for abstract silk paintings. The painting technique he employs in this new series of silk works is a rendition of traditional Indian and Indonesian craftsmanship that the artist has adopted and refined.

The exhibition Bo Lak –with its title open to a plethora of interpretations– shows some 30 new abstract silk paintings in various dimensions. Colour transitions moving softly from white to blue into grey or pink to blue into yellow are on view with an effect not dissimilar to the endless and gentle play of colours on the horizon.

The floor of the gallery space is covered with very fine, white sand, which by putting visitors on an unstable floor alters the viewers’ experience of the exhibition. In addition, the uniformity of the sand supports the soft transitions of colours in the paintings on the wall.
Matti Braun was born 1968 in Berlin and studied at the Städelschule, Frankfurt/Main and at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK).

Solo exhibitions include: Gost Log, Arnolfini, Bristol (2012); Salo, Kunstverein Braunschweig, Braunschweig and La Galerie, Contemporary Art Center, Noisy-le-Sec (both 2010); Kola, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz (2009) and Özurfa, Museum Ludwig, Köln (2008). Group exhibitions (selection): Black Sun—Alchemy, Diaspora And Heterotopia, Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon (on view till 27 April 2014); Made in Germany Zwei, Sprengel Museum Hannover (2012); 20 Jahre Ludwig Forum, Ludwig Forum Aachen (2011); Until It Makes Sense, Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2011) and Mental Archeology, Crédac, Ivry-sur Seine/Kunstverein Nürnberg (both 2010). The artist lives and works in Cologne.
