In the gallery he sketches a situation of an entrance hall, from which the viewer is able to experience ephemeral impressions and associations adjusting themselves very fast when entering a room. In the pictures, doors open into an imaginary world of associative linkages visualizing temperature, lighting conditions, traces of perfume and personal memories. In simultaneous impressions, the memories of different events and situations are layered.
In the gallery Ars Futura, Mario Sala (* 1965, lives in Winterthur) provides an insight into rooms of a flashing parallel world which can only be ours.
A Reception, several entrance-situations (Main Entrance, Entrée I and II) and the rooms behind, inside, farther back, further down, even further down, further inside and next door (all 2003/04) put the viewer in threshold situations at doorsteps of different rooms. In there Sala gives impressions of frosty cold, bright light or flickering heat, which are mixed with memories of scenic fragments or dialogue excerpts from movies. Optical images of light and speed develop in a parallel world.
A newspaper image of a concert by the band Red Hot Chilli Peppers serves as original image for the seven rooms. The stage scaffold and the spotlights are still vaguely visible, building the essential architectural structure of the rooms. With the layering of colors, material and motives Mario Sala develops rooms of amazing diversity. The characteristics of his working technique consist in a versatile use of everyday pictorial material resulting for example from photographed TV-pictures, other found images and cutouts from models. Also the two objectlike pieces door bell and entrance above experiment with found material and aim at the illustration of the constitution of things and their material and associative perception.
Salas careful working methods remind of epistemological experiments in which he searches for visual representations of different impressions. He uses media images and through them he finds his own poetics, which are fed from personal feelings in threshold situations and intermediate moments. The light and speed images present a dream-like glance into a universe between time.
Mario Salas exhibition in the gallery Ars Futura gives an excellent taste of his solo exhibition at Helmhaus Zurich next year.
