This year sees the launch of Art Screen, a celebration of some of the finest arts documentaries from across the globe.
Glasgow International is excited to announce further details for its 6th edition which
opens on 4 April 2014. Over the 19-day Festival, Glasgow International 2014 will boast
a programme of curated commissions and projects by new Director, Sarah McCrory as
well as 52 exhibitions and 90 events, performances and talks at over 50 spaces across
the city of Glasgow. Showcasing work by more than 150 of the best local and
international artists, the 2014 Festival will further highlight Glasgow as one of the
world’s most important creative hubs for contemporary visual art.
FURTHER DETAILS OF DIRECTOR’S PROGRAMME
Glasgow International is delighted to announce further details about the exhibitions of
the Director’s programme all curated for the first time by the Festival’s Director, Sarah
McCrory. Within Tramway Galleries 1 and 5, the renowned and influential artist
MICHAEL SMITH will present his first solo exhibition in a UK institution entitled
‘Videos and Miscellaneous Stuff From Storage (Pt. 2)’, curated in association with
Mark Beasley. The exhibition will showcase a series of his most important works from
the last three decades exploring the medium of television. As Smith has been using
various identities in his work for over thirty years, this show will focus on the persona
of ‘Mike’, an everyman whose actions reflect our own inadequacies. Exhibiting in
Tramway’s T2 space, BEDWYR WILLIAMS, will present ‘Echt’, a film installation
which takes the form of a full size diorama, depicting an encounter in a dark forest
clearing. As part of this work viewers can see a new film, which explores a dystopian
future and alternative systems of exchange. These exhibitions will be accompanied by
an ‘In Conversation’ between Michael Smith and Bedwyr Williams, moderated by
Mark Beasley, which will focus on humour in an evening event that will also include a
performance by each artist.
At GALLERY OF MODERN ART (GoMA), ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIĆ will
present her first institutional solo exhibition in the UK, which will explore a
marginalised representation of women within popular science fiction and time travel.
Domanović will install a series of large scale sculptural banners printed with images
depicting motifs and characters stemming from her research. Her presentation on the
ground floor of GoMA will use the building’s position and architectural features to re-
contextualise the gallery space as a ‘time-less survival’ pod. On the first floor of
GoMA, SUE TOMPKINS will present a new performance and a new suite of fabric
pieces, paintings and works on newsprint as part of her exhibition ‘Come to Ozark’.
Glasgow International 2014 is also delighted to announce that, in partnership with the
Year
of
HOMECOMING
SCOTLAND
2014, the
renowned
MCLELLAN
GALLERIES will be reopened to present work by JORDAN WOLFSON, AVERY
SINGER, CHARLOTTE PRODGER and HUDINILSON JR. On the lower level of
the McLellan Galleries, will be a mini-survey of Jordan Wolfson’s work which will
reflect on the artist’s practice. Wolfson is known for creating sculptural videos that use
high-quality production methods, such as animation to reflect the place of the artist in
our constructed world. Within McLellan, the Festival will also present a show of new
work by AVERY SINGER created by the modern and recently available 3D modelling
software tool ‘Google Sketch Up’. CHARLOTTE PRODGER will produce a new
sculptural installation that explores the contingency and intimacy of physical and
textual materials. An exhibition of work by the late Brazilian artist HUDINILSON JR
will also be displayed, looking back across 35 years of his practice that includes
autobiographical and diaristic collage, performative collaboration, small sculptures and
Xerox works, tracing an as yet under-represented but expansive and rich life.
As part of the Director’s programme, there will also be an exhibition at
KELVINGROVE ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM by SIMON MARTIN which
will include new film work taking the form of a remote drift through objects and
reproductions gleaned from multiple sources within the collection of the museum. The
show will be presented on the ground floor of the building, with reference to
Kelvingrove’s unique hang.
Within Glasgow’s GOVANHILL BATHS, a dis-used public swimming pool, now re-
purposed as a community centre and creative venue will be used as part of the
Homecoming Scotland 2014 programme, hosting a presentation by ANTHEA
HAMILTON AND NICHOLAS BYRNE entitled ‘Love’. This exhibition will include
large, brightly-coloured, suspended and free-standing inflatable sculptures which
incorporate influences from advertising, popular culture, psychedelia and have an
underlying sensuality.

Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art is delighted to announce several new solo
and group exhibitions by leading local and international artists for the 2014 programme.
New solo exhibitions include Scotland’s first presentation by internationally acclaimed
Mexican artist GABRIEL KURI at THE COMMON GUILD which will explore the
relationship between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ elements in the nature of sculpture. The Modern
Institute will present the first ever exhibition in the UK by collective LIFE & THE

exhibitions will also be showcased in off-site locations to present the unknown and
forgotten architectural gems of the city in a new light. Developed in collaboration with
Dalmarnock Community Centre and local children, and announced as part of the
Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme in July 2013, the State of Play project will explore
the process of bringing the playground to life over a nine month period to explore the
role of the child in the city. Working alongside this project, artist NILS NORMAN,

of associated workshops and events to be hosted on the playground during the festival.

STUDIO looking at the themes of multiplicity and reproduction. Artist HARDEEP
PANDHAL, recipient of the Glasgow Open Bursary, will present an exhibition on the
former site of the CAMP COFFEE FACTORY investigating the history and visual
identity of the space. Carlton Place will also display the work of CHRISTINA
RAMBERG, a central figure in the Chicago Imagist movement.
New group exhibitions will include a curated show by Glasgow-based, Turner Prize
nominee JIM LAMBIE which will bring together his work with that of ANDY
WARHOL and BALDVIN RINGSTED at VOIDOID ARCHIVE. A DISUSED
UNDERGROUND CAR PARK will be the site of a new exhibition by artists
NADÈGE DRUZKOWSKI, SUKAINA KUBBA, JENNY LEWIS, PHILIPPE
MURPHY, ALYS OWENS and BETH SHAPEERO who will transform the space

Glasgow International
Taking place every other year, and combining some of the characteristics of a
conventional arts ‘biennial’ with a more event-based experience, Glasgow
International is a unique event in the international calendar. With a ground-
breaking and dynamic approach to the presentation of contemporary visual arts
practice, Glasgow International offers both globally recognised and emerging
Glasgow-based artists across the spectrum of the city’s art scene as a platform to
show new work to both national and international audiences while also introducing
the work of important international artists. Since its inception in 2005 the Festival
has brought together the key organisations in Glasgow’s diverse artistic
community, presenting unique events and special commissions rooted in the
achievements of the local artistic community, while drawing on important
international developments in contemporary art.
Sarah McCrory has spent the last three years as curator of Frieze Foundation, a
non-profit organisation responsible for the curated programme of Frieze Art Fair
including Frieze Projects and Film. She played an instrumental role in Frieze
Projects East, which involved the production of six new public art projects situated
throughout the Olympic host boroughs of East London as part of the London 2012
Festival. Prior to joining the Frieze Foundation McCrory was co-curator of Studio
Voltaire, London.
