The exhibition Manuela Marques, La taille de ce vent est un triangle dans l'eau brings together a significant body of recent photographic work by Manuela Marques. Approximately 30 of the exhibited photographs highlight the themes and subjects the artist has been interested in since the mid-1990s. Using photography and video, the artist has developed a highly subjective, poetic and intimate imaginary. Manuela Marques' work primarily focuses on portraiture, still life, and landscape. It encompasses themes that vary from trees, to stones, bodies, objects, architectonic details... and fragments of real situations with details that reveal new perceptions and emotions. Devoid of a context or an environment, the images have a mysterious character that incites new interpretations. The images she creates thus incite the spectator to question what they perceived of a reality, and even to doubt their own perceptions. The exhibition aims to trace a physical and sensitive route, with no narrative thrust, in which images are articulated, dialogue and allow for multiple new readings.
Manuela Marques was born in Portugal in 1959; she lives and works in Paris. In 2011, she received the BES Photo Prize. Her work is regularly shown in France and abroad. She is represented by the galerie Anne Barrault in Paris, Caroline Pagès Gallery in Lisbon (Portugal) and galerie Vermelho in São Paulo (Brazil).
Sérgio Mah was born in 1970; he lives and works in Lisbon. He is a curator and an art critic. He was the artistic director of Lisboa Photo Biennial and of Photo España, as well as the curator of the Portuguese pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
