In their solo show at MK G, collaborating artists Smith/Stewart present a
recent body of work revolving around their fundamental concerns: body and
space, communication, darkness and the 'in-between'.
All three of MK G's gallery spaces will be filled with their installations.
In the Cube and Middle Galleries Smith/Stewart present a new sculptural
installation as part three of their project A Black Thread, commissioned by
the Film and Video Umbrella. The work, which is stark in character, uses
light, video, sound, found and fabricated objects to create an arena, a
studio, a stage, an interrogation room, in which the viewer is confronted by
psychological and physical extremes. The deconstructed nature of the set-up
leads the viewer to question what might constitute the real. To quote Mark
Wilsher in his review of part one of A Black Thread, (Art Monthly, Dec 02)
Å’What does it mean to feel the presence of something that is blatantly not
there?'
In the Long Gallery they present Ahead (film), 2000. Originally shot on
black and white 16mm film & transferred to DVD, it was filmed driving down a
remote unlit country road at night. The artists repeatedly turn the car
headlights on and off in a consensual pact. Trapped in an endless loop, Å’He
drives. She films. And Death rides with them.' In the punctuated sections
of darkness, they drive blind taking the viewer along for the ride. In
Ahead (film), Smith/Stewart explore notions of the void, fear and
dislocation; using the car to suggest the themes of sex and death that run
through their work.
Smith/Stewart are currently showing in the Hayward Gallery Touring
Exhibition, Incommunicado and in Tate Britain's, A Century of Artists' Film
in Britain. There is an opportunity to hear them speak about their work,
