The Dutch artist Wouter Klein Velderman presents scale models, preliminary sketches and variations on
objects that he uses in the performance ÚT (OET).
ÚT (OET), the Hungarian word for "street", is the title of a performance born from the collaboration
between the choreographer Krisztina de Châtel and the visual artist himself. In this performance three
main elements come together: the job of the road paver, dance and visual art. Wouter Klein Velderman
reveals himself as an ally in de Châtel's research, always interested in what happens in the society, in
raw truth, dance and sculptural elements. Thus, the connection between dance and visual arts was born.
After Krisztina collaborated with sanitation workers in Zooi and with firemen in BRAND!, she finds
inspiration in the strenuous job of road pavers, always involved in the construction of permanent
buildings. The repetitive movements of the road pavers, the beauty that arises by their actions, and the
large quantities of paving stones are the starting point for the performance ÚT (OET).
The materials Wouter Klein Velderman uses for his sculptures and installations often come from the
industrial production, like metal, PVC fabric or wood. He treats these rough and impersonal materials
with great care and attention: each sculpture arises in strong contrast with their subject, like a pile of
stones, a sea-container or a factory site.
The performances of Krisztina de Châtel change, oppose and confront: vulnerable human bodies are
confronted with the elements of nature, like wind, earth and water. She regularly works outside the
theater with groups of people not from the danceworld, like dustmen and those who have a psychic
background. The choreographies of Krisztina de Châtel increasingly show her vision on society.
Wouter Klein Velderman and Krisztina de Châtel worked together in 2013 on the performance 'In
Holland staat een huis (In Holland there's a house)' commissioned by the Mondriaan Fonds.
Wouter Klein Velderman (Deventer, 1979) studied a.o. at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Currently
he works at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy as a sculpture teacher. Since 2005 he has been part of several
solo and group exhibition in The Nederlands and abroad. He is well known for his outdoor sculptures in
several public spaces in Suriname and The Netherlands.
The Hungarian choreographer Krisztina de Châtel has created more then 50 choreographies and two
dancemovies in the last 34 years. For more then 30 years she was the artistic director of her own
company 'Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel'. Since 2013 de Châtel produces under the name 'de Châtel sur
place'.
