Juan Iribarren

Sicardi Gallery, Houston

An exhibition of the recent oil paintings and inkjet photographs. Produced between 2002 and 2003, the group addresses obsessively a single visual circumstance. We are looking at works that are objectively abstract but whose aim is to represent a void in the form of an empty white wall. Each one of these paintings superimposes layers or moments referring to reflections of lights and of shadows on the immense wall in the artist's studio.

Recent Work

We are pleased to present an exhibition of the recent oil paintings and inkjet photographs by Juan Iribarren.

The photographs act as a coherent counterpoint to this process, in the sense that each one of them focuses on one of these specific visual layers. Painting manages here to turn a concrete reality determined by an absence of elements into an object full of representation. If abstract painting has shed subject matter in order to become only painting, these paintings embrace a visual situation once again, this time one where there is nothing but shadows and lights on a flat plane. The viewer will have difficulty recognizing here a visual moment. All the paintings, however, refer to specific moments of light in which generally the vanishing daylight is further confused by the presence of artificial lights meticulously controlled by the artist. These situations result in a color scheme of an undeniable atmospheric density at times full of stridency and chromatic improbability. The photographs present iconographic evidence of the process: they reveal the situations in the paintings, this time with the specific objective gaze of the digital camera.

There will be a reception with the artist on Thursday, February 12th from 6 to 8 pm.
