Michel Basbous was born in Rachana, Lebanon, in 1921. He studied at Academie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA) from 1945 to 1949 then earned a scholarship from the Lebanese Government and pursued his apprenticeship at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), in Paris from 1949 to 1951. After a second stay in Paris (1954-1955) during which he frequented the atelier of Ossip Zadkine, he settled in Beirut where he became an active member of the artistic community, took part in exhibitions and started teaching at American University of Beirut. After the 1958 Civil War, Michel Basbous moved to his native Rachana. There, working in an open-air studio, he engaged the collaboration of his brothers Alfred and Joseph and developed the project of a village as a center for transdisciplinary art practices. After a fruitful life, Michel Basbous passed away in 1981, transmitting a considerable heritage to his wife Therese and his son Anachar.
