STANDARDS
New Paintings & Drawings
For jazz musicians 'standards' provide the timeless themes for their
improvisations. In a similar way Oxlade uses the familiar genres of the
figure or still life, and his work probes the limits of acceptability as it
plays between the subject as something recognizable, and the material
demands of the painting as a painting.
His work has been exhibited regularly in London since the eighties and it
has firm support from those who, with him, value a shared painterly
language. In his appeal to painters themselves, he has been described as 'a
painter's painter' and 'an insider's outsider'. Since his early days as a
student in David Bomberg's drawing classes his work has evolved into a
highly personal style, within a field which might loosely be described as
"neo-expressionist". Reckless in his use of materials he is, at the same
time, a traditionalist in the sense defined by T.S. Eliot: he values the
tradition but believes it can survive only through constant change.
The Gallery website includes over 20 images from the Exhibition as well as
the text of a Dialogue between the artist and Marcus Reichert. A visit is
strongly recommended.
