189 of the world's leading contemporary art galleries The Armory Show is dedicated to presenting the very best new art by living artists. The New York Times (circ. 1,118,565) reports: The Armory Show s claim to be the International Fair of New Art is more or less fulfilled. This coming March will prove once more that The Armory Show is the world s leading fair devoted entirely to contemporary art. (The Washington Post; circ. 812,559). The Armory Show 2004 Selection Committee reviewed over 450 applications for the 189 available spots, an increase in applications of 13% over 2003. Many more qualified galleries applied than could be accepted. The Armory Show 2004 will welcome exhibitors from 5 continents. Countries include: Australia (1), Austria (4), Belgium (1), Brazil (2), Canada (1), Costa Rica (1), France (13), Germany (25), Ireland (1), Israel (2), Italy (3), Japan (7), Mexico (2), The Netherlands (3), Norway (1), Russia (1), Spain (2), Sweden (2), Switzerland (4), United-Kingdom (18) and USA (92). Galleries from China (2) and Korea (1) will be exhibiting at the fair for the very first time. Always on the cutting edge of the contemporary art world, 32 first-time exhibitors will be debuting at The Armory Show in March.Collectors and visitors will be able to admire and purchase works by over 2,000 artists in all media (painting, sculpture, video, photography, installation, performance and more). Continuing a long-time tradition, many artists are creating new works of art specifically for The Armory Show 2004. Prices will range from a few hundred to millions of dollars, offering everyone the chance to start or enhance a collection. The Armory Show takes place on Piers 90 and 92 on Manhattan s West Side, two converted ship terminals with beautiful natural light offering fantastic views of the Hudson River. Exhibitors will be joined by many thousands of their peers and art enthusiasts from around the globe making New York City the true center of the international art world. Exhibitors and visitors will also be able to take advantage of the amazing resources New York City has to offer: international museum collections and exhibitions, the best and most diverse dining in the world, awardwinning theater and much, much more. Of particular note, The Armory Show 2004 opens the same week as the Whitney 2004 Biennial Exhibition and is co-located with The Architectural Digest Home Design Show on Pier 94. The Armory Show weekend promises to be the most exciting and important annual art event in the Americas.
The Opening Night Preview Party benefiting the Exhibition Fund of The Museum of Modern Art, New York will take place on the evening of March 11. Once again, the evening promises to be one of the most attended and talked about events of the art world, attracting hundreds of the world s top collectors, curators, critics and celebrities. Information on this event is available from The Museum of Modern Art: specialevents@moma.org, tel. 212-708-9680
Artist Lisa Ruyter was commissioned by The Armory Show 2004 to create artwork for all visual materials associated with the fair. This is the third of an ongoing series of annual commissions to be awarded to a different artist each year, honoring The Armory Show s commitment to living artists (Karen Kilimnik, 2002; Barnaby Furnas, 2003). Commenting on the Ruyter commission, Director of The Armory Show Katelijne De Backer said: The focus of The Armory Show has always been on new art. We have a worldwide reputation for energy and innovation. Lisa bases her intensely graphic and vibrant paintings on photographs she takes of people and places encountered during her daily life and travels. At first glance, they seem ordinary and banal notwithstanding the eye-popping explosion of grafted-on color and line. But their ordinariness conceals a deep and moving expression of modern life out of balance. A catalogue featuring Ruyter s art will be available at the fair. Lavishly illustrated with full color reproductions of exhibited works, The Armory Show 2004 catalogue will feature comprehensive contact information for each exhibitor as well as a complete artist index. It will be used as a reference tool by all art professionals year round. This year s publication will include a separate tribute to The Armory Show founders Pat Hearn and Colin de Land with a commemorative essay written by Linda Yablonsky.
82 of the world s most reputable art publications, not-for-profits cultural organizations and art related businesses will also have a presence at The Armory Show 2004. As vital members of the contemporary art community, they are essential in disseminating information about art, initiating and furthering artists careers and maintaining the cohesion of hundreds of art institutions and businesses worldwide.
