Tonico Lemos Auad: That which cannot be repaired
curated by Kiki Mazzucchelli

As part of the 2015 exhibition program, Pivô presents the individual exhibition by Tonico Lemos Auad, Brazilian artist born in Belém and living in London since the late 1990’s. Curated by Kiki Mazzuchelli, this project includes commissioned works specific for Pivô’s space, apart from selected works that mobilize central themes in the artist’s practice. Opening on the 5th of April, 2015, this will be the artist’s first individual show at a Brazilian institution.

Auad’s work evidence rituals and technical abilities, from embroidery to knitting and woodcutting. These practices, today almost obsolete, evoke traditional methods of repair and renovation of ordinary objects that develops and unfolds in different ways for Tonico’s work.

Tonico Lemos Auad graduated in architecture at FAU-USP and has also completed his masters in Visual Arts at Goldsmiths College. During his 15 year trajectory, Auad has participated in important exhibitions such as Antartica Artes with Folha (Pavilhão Manuel da Nóbrega, São Paulo, 1996), Beck’s Futures (ICA, London, 2004), The British Art Show 06 (Hayward Gallery, London, 2005) and Folkstone Triennial (Folkstone, 2011).

Kiki Mazzuchelli is an independent curator and writer, based between London and São Paulo. Masters in Visual Cultures also from Goldsmiths College and PhD at TrAIN (University of the Arts), where she researches the history of exhibitions with a focus on Brazilian art. In 2013, she co-curated the exhibition ‘Mythologies’ with Maria do Carmo Pontes at MAM-SP. Her recent publications include ‘The São Paulo Biennial and the rise of contemporary Brazilian art’ (In Contemporary Art Brazil, ed. Lucas Arruda Deserto-Modelo

Pivô presents the exhibition ‘Deserto-Modelo’ by visual artist Lucas Arruda, as part of 2015 exhibition program. Arruda initially stands out for his paintings, for this exhibition however the artist will also present new studies and experimentations less disseminated. The exhibition includes oil paintings produced between 2014 and 2015 as well as new commissions of his light studies in paint and projection as well as a project where he paints directly into the surface of transparent 35mm slides later to be projected into a rhythmic sequence in the space. None of his works have titles, while all of his individual exhibitions are entitled ‘Deserto – Modelo’, without translations.

At Pivô’s context Arruda’s work achieves new dimensions and is directed into an installation process. His already known research on imagined horzions and the passage of time in nature is extrapolated into the environment, reacting to the architectural particularities of this exhibition space. By entering the enclosed room with a meticulously controlled lighting, the visitor is completely involved within the artist’s universe, where landscapes are points of departure for a deeper immersion into questions such as the notion of permanence, time’s relentlessness and the intensity of human emotions.

Lucas Arruda
After studying Fine Arts at Faculdade Santa Marcelina in 2009 he started exhibiting publicly.
