Intimate Images

Alliance Francaise de Singapour, Singapore

'A celebration of life! Experiencing the world of images through my eyes. Eyes that have continuously searched for the beauty of intimacy in all aspects. Intimacy in human imagery, my consciousness dives deeper and deeper every day, ferreting out the emotions of my subjects. My brushes and pigments speak the language of love and harmony. Every painting is an embodiment of the celebration of life.' Paresh Maity

In this upcoming exhibition in April at Alliance Francaise de Singapour, together with EASEL and Gallery Sumukha, come established Indian artist, Paresh Maity. Working mainly with oil on canvases and watercolour on handmade papers, the artist will showcase some of his best works.

Below is an abstract from writer Uma Nair, on Maity's style and concept.

'...The eye-popping effect of the canvases that celebrate the passage of time as much as the narrative brings on the many influences that have come to stay in the mind's inner eye of the artist-traveller and photographer in Paresh. The human body in the paintings along with the faces and their diagonal status on the frame have a world of complexities within ... which gives us the first clue that a sari or a musical instrument is more than just a fashion statement. The symbol is what sustains and you are forced to think of the life force of a river flowing... Obviously Paresh hones in on his artistic openness; he explores his initial exploratory quest and gives us works that have neither reticence nor reservations. This is why the canvases can be captivating, they say much more as you start looking at them from varied distances and angles – this perhaps is the key to a style that was first taken up by Paresh when he began...'

Maity has already emerged as an artist of rare and extraordinary talent and ranks among the more important figures of contemporary Indian art today. His brilliance and creativity lie in his ability to internalize the Indian experience and capture its essence. His early works reflect his formal training; largely figurative, they were especially the transparent water colours, what might be called ‘picturesque'. But gradually he began to move towards abstraction. Though still involved with landscape, Maity's imagery and form became more and more abstract until, with a flourish of a few calligraphic strokes and washes of colour, he came to create pictures of great evanescent beauty. Restless by nature and an avid traveler, Maity journeys across India and the world in search of new inspiration. Today, Maity's works reflect an artist deeply committed to the marriage of joy and celebration of life. His paintings exude a powerful sensuality and positive energy. He lives and works in Delhi, India.
