Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents the Guys exhibition by Maria Ionova-Gribina. It includes three photo series. Each series narrates about self-consciousness and methods of self-presentation of men. It also explores one of the roles, i.e. a handsome man, a father or a lover.
The Dick measuring contest project researches the male nude self-portrait. To create the series, the artist used anonymous images found on the web and printed them manually, putting the photo paper to the computer screen. Thus, Ionova-Gribina transformed virtual images into unique objects. Placing them into the museum, the author continued the tradition, glorifying the cult of the body, which started in ancient times.
The Fathers project is devoted to the research of identification through parenthood. The author tries to find answers to the questions, whether a contemporary man is ready to be a father and what he must achieve before having children. The artist brings an element of performance into the project. She invited childless men and offered them to be photographed with other people’s children, imagining as their fathers. In addition to the photos, the artist collected short interviews. They are also a part of the exhibition.
In the Portrait with a Lover project, the author asked her friends and strangers to imagine their ideal photo with their lovers and to send a sample. There is a stereotype that women like «romantic» pictures of lovers. The artist is interested in what pictures men like, from the overall plot to the plastic of bodies. Then Maria Ionova-Gribina made another photograph of the scene, playing the characters with her friends. Thus, the artist created a catalogue of ideal images of loving couples, existing in the minds of men.
