Remote

(Toronto) April 23, 2004 — In conjunction with the Contact 04 Photography Festival, Gallery Neubacher announces the opening of a new exhibition, Remote, featuring photographs by Gallery newcomer Katya Belilovsky.

Photographing for the likes of Vogue and Cosmopolitan, Russian fashion photographer Katya Belilovsky charges in a new creative direction with her first Canadian show, Remote. Employing unconventional techniques Belilovsky crafts a salient commentary on the reality of daily life. She captures moments stolen from popular culture and condenses them through photographic process. Stories and emotions emerge from an earlier non-existence revealing their lasting, conflicting and often disturbing impression.

Belilovsky's work taps the ever-receptive unconscious mind, revealing the familiar, but routinely forgotten images ensnared clicking through ordinary life. Overlaid objects merge to yield an experience without time or place—somewhere in midst of our mass media bombardment. The multi-layered images generate a haze of emotion as the viewer reconnects with familiar. Remote's photographs reflect perceptions of modern reality, a reality that can be altered by an object as insignificant as the remote.

About Kayta Belilovsky:
In 1991, Kayta Belilovsky began her professional photography career in Russia. Her early years were spent observing the dynamics of chaotic public gatherings, especially concerts. After some three years exploring the concert scene, Belilovsky's interests expanded beyond creating album covers for a number of music labels. Her transition to fashion photography resulted in work for Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Playboy, OM and Vogue. Since moving Toronto, she has begun to experiment with layered abstractions, employing unconventional techniques to convey emotion.

Opening reception: 7-10 p.m., 4th May, 2004
