comunicato stampa

This exhibition, organized expressly for the opening of our exhibition venue in Barcelona, shows how color is transformed into one of the ways of travelling from Impressionism to Avant-Garde, through 72 top-level works loaned by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Artists include Van Gogh, Matisse, Seurat, Gauguin, Cézanne, Monet, Derain and Renoir. These masterworks have very rarely been exhibited outside the Musée d’Orsay and have been very generously loaned for this special occasion.

A color-filled journey

In the wake of Impressionism, painting exploded with color and the feelings, the subjective experience, the personal viewpoint, of the artist became prevalent. Artists had the sense that color expressed something in itself and threw themselves into finding it. As they themselves wrote in the letters they exchanged and in their diaries, they gradually moved away from nature towards the abstraction of color. According to the exhibition’s curator, Isabelle Cahn, the exhibition “starts with a work by Van Gogh, from when he arrived in Paris and discovered modern painting and his color palette changed, with very vivid colors, along with a deconstructed painting style.”
Along this journey of color, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the work of Van Gogh, Cézanne and Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as Seurat, Signac and the Pont-Aven School, led by Gauguin, and finally Sérusier, Bonnard and the “Nabi” group of artists. The exhibition is rounded off by Renoir, Matisse, Monet’s final work and Picasso with his Nude Against a Red Background.

The Garriga Nogués room is opening in the autumn of 2015. Since the facility opened, during different periods and types of activities, we have featured important content of Catalan origin and we have collaborated with some of the leading cultural institutions in Catalonia. A recent standout example is that of our collaboration with the MNAC in 2011 on the exhibition The Splendor of Romanesque, which presented the museum’s exceptional collection of Catalan Romanesque art in Madrid for the first time.
The opening of this new facility consolidates this trajectory. We expect to organize exhibitions focusing on the early years of pictorial modernity (1850 - 1950) and on the great masters of photography. Our exhibition space covers an area of over 2700 m2 in an emblematic edifice that embraces various different architectural styles ranging from Rococo to Neoclassicism to Modernism.
