The Art of Erro

First Wednesday Salons
May 5 and June 2, 2004, 6-8 pm

Please join Grey Art Gallery director, Lynn Gumpert, on May 5 and June 2, 2004 for the Grey's "First Wednesday Salons," informal gatherings held from 6 to 8 pm on the first Wednesday of each month that the gallery is open to the public (except July).

Worldscapes: The Art of Erro is the first major American survey of the work of an acclaimed contemporary Icelandic painter. Born in 1932, Erro, who adopted this invented alias, settled in Paris in 1958. During the early 1960s he also spent time in New York, where he participated in the lively performance art scene.

Like American Pop artists, Erro is fascinated by consumer culture and its plethora of mass-produced images. He, however, deploys a kaleidoscope of cartoon characters, art icons, and political figures to surpass his American counterparts in commenting on pressing political issues with imagination and urgency. A firm believer that more is better, Erro moved Pop art into-as critic Arthur Danto has noted-its Baroque phase. Not content simply to blur the boundaries between high and low, Erro creates colorful, jam-packed postmodern history paintings that mix and juxtapose styles while triggering profound questions about the nature of contemporary life.

Worldscapes: The Art of Erro features approximately 70 paintings and other works selected from the Erro collection in the Reykjavik Art Museum. The exhibition is co-organized by the Grey Art Gallery and the Reykjavik Art Museum.

Worldscapes: The Art of Erro remains on view through July 17, 2004.
