An artists' project inspired by a mathematical theory that was introduced in the reformed education system in Germany in the beginning of the 1970's: 'Mengenlehre', translated to English as 'Set Theory'. 'Mengenlehre' is intended to create a learning approach that is reflective, abstracted and not purely algebra based. Tobias and Raphael Danke, two artists based in Aachen, Germany, grew up within the spirit of this education theory that lingers in the minds of their generation.

Tobias and Raphael Danke, two artists based in Aachen, Germany, grew up within the spirit of this education theory that lingers in the minds of their generation.
Mengenbüro relates Set Models and Set Theories to contemporary art to explore whether this abstraction can be applied to our perception of objects and the everyday world. In the exhibition this is communicated via photographs, objects, schemes and spatial installations by invited artists/ collaborators including Rita McBride, Brian O'Connell, Petra Herzog, Silke Schatz, Ulrich Strothjohann, Lee Taylor, Johannes Wohnseifer and René Zeh.
Mengenbüro is a communicative artists' experiment that started with an exhibition in 1998 in the NAK, Aachen and intends to travel and include other artists' works, in always-changing constellations of objects and minds.

Mengenbüro is co-curated by Susanne Titz, Director of NAK, Aachen and is part of the nrw@uk cultural exchange programme running throughout 2004.
As part of nrw@uk an exhibition by photographers Laurenz Berges & Simone Nieweg runs at Streetlevel Photoworks, Glasgow from 15 May to 26 June.
nrw@uk is an extensive cultural exchange programme bringing a wide variety of events from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to Britain. Following uk@nrw, organised by the British Council which showcased contemporary British art in the cities of Aachen, Bielefeld, Bonn, Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Krefeld and Münster in 2002, the nrw@uk project was launched last year by the Goethe-Institut London. Throughout this year artists and speakers, films and exhibitions will present the wealth of culture originating in Germany's most populous federal state.
