Showcasing emerging talent from Europe's largest cultural quarter
12 June - 29 August 2004

The Whitechapel re-launches the East End Academy to showcase the immense creative output from Europe's most vibrant cultural quarter.

The Whitechapel's East End Academy was first launched in 1932 as an open submission exhibition for artists in the area. East London has dramatically changed since this time and is now home to over 80 galleries and 10,000 artists – the largest concentration in Europe. The East End Academy will profile the established and emerging artists from this hotbed of talent for the visual arts.

The panel of judges includes Chantal Crousel, Director, Chantal Crousel Gallery, Paris; Chris Ofili, artist; and Niru Ratman, critic and curator, who will select around 40 artists for the show at a judging in March. The exhibition will include painting, photography, sculpture, video and other media. Many of the works on show will be for sale, offering visitors the opportunity to invest in both established names and artists of the future.

In addition to the exhibition at the Whitechapel, the East End Academy Commissions will be a series of artist's commissions taking the Gallery out into its community. Placed in a range of non-art venues – including the restaurants and shops of Brick Lane – they will lead visitors to the site currently being developed by the East End Academy's partner organisation, Rich Mix, where 4 specially commissioned works will be presented.

First held in 1932 ‘for all artists living or working East of the famous Aldgate Pump', the East End Academy's popularity ensured it became an annual event. Since the 1970s East London has become home to many of the UK's most important artists and the Whitechapel Open (as the East End Academy was later called) showed the work of artists such as Anthony Gormley, Claude Heath, Nicky Hoberman, Cornelia Parker, Richard Wentworth, Rachel Whiteread and Alison Wilding, often for the first time.

‘The East End Academy celebrates the immense creative talent and vibrant cultural diversity of East London. We hope to provide East Londoners with a really exciting free show of work from their area, as well as draw international attention to this centre of artistic excellence.' Iwona Blazwick, Director, Whitechapel.

The East End Academy is curated by Andrea Tarsia, Head of Exhibitions & Projects, Whitechapel.
A full-colour publication including information on all artists accompanies the exhibition.
Rich Mix is a major international arts, culture, education and heritage centre in East London, scheduled to open in 2005. The Whitechapel is developing a creative partnership with Rich Mix to generate exciting new opportunities for artistic and cultural ventures.
The East End Academy is part of a year's events marking the Lord Mayor's Appeal of which the Whitechapel is a beneficiary.
The re-launch of the East End Academy was made possible by the artists who generously donated works to A Bigger Splash at the Art2002 London Art Fair. The Whitechapel wishes to thank the following artists; Edward Allington, Fiona Banner, David Batchelor, Sonia Boyce, Tony Bevan, Angela de la Cruz, Adam Dant, Ian Davenport, Peter Doig, Tracey Emin, Mark Francis, Anya Gallaccio, Claude Heath, Nicky Hoberman, David Leapman, Marysia Lewandowska & Neil Cummings, Cathy de Monchaux, Paul Morrison, Paul Noble, Chris Ofili, Julian Opie, Grayson Perry, Bob & Roberta Smith, Wolfgang Tillmans, Shafique Uddin, Jessica Voorsanger, Rachel Whiteread, Alison Wilding, & Paul Winstanley.
