Drawings and photographs from 1973 to 1988 by Howard M. Christopherson.
Drawings and photographs from 1973 to 1988 by Howard M. Christopherson.
Howard Christopherson is known for his B/W photography and as the owner of Icebox, but beginning in 1973 he began making hundreds of surreal pen and ink drawings and made photographs using color slide film. This exhibit includes many color photographs and drawings that have never been shown before.
The earliest drawings and photographic images included are from 1973 when Christopherson was 18 years old. Transcending out of High School, Howard was filled with imagination and an intense interest in art. His ambition included teaching himself how to draw his free flowing thoughts and to make photographs of what he saw.
The Viet Nam War was coming to a dramatic end, Rock and Roll music was forceful, drugs where everywhere, a time when many young people read Carlos Castaneda, the Lord of the Rings and dabbled in Eastern thinking. A time when Watergate was on TV every day and Richard Nixon resigned. It was during this time when Christopherson decided to sell his 1967 automobile and buy a new camera, lots of Kodachrome film and hitch hike in search of America and himself.
Recently Christopherson acquired a digital scanner and an archival inkjet printer. This new technology enabled him to print the color images himself from his original slides. The images included have only been 35 mm Kodachrome slides until now. The pen and ink drawings also have been stored away all this time in archival boxes, making this the first time any of this work has been exhibited.
