Mr. and Mrs. Gone

Bucheon Gallery, San Francisco

Bucheon is pleased to present two Los Angeles based painters who worked and studied in the Bay area. Both artists make abstract paintings that are very different but somehow relate esthetically. They are old best friends who will show together for the first time.

Annie grew up in Marin County and was very influenced by imagery from the sixties inspired by mandalas and other language from the era. She describes her work as "spacey, spiritual illustration" and is challenged by incorporating her ideas into a current vision. Her departure point is the simple raw canvas which she may start a doodle on, and utilizing spray paint and rich oil paints creating an improbable, and unpredictable landscape. In spite of imagery that could be misunderstood, she pushes the possibilities of a genre from her childhood.

Christian returns to Bucheon after receiving a very positive review in Art in America from Mark Van Proyen for his last show..He continues his exploration between abstraction and figuration using letters and words, paint and media, secret portraits and more for this body of work. Paint is applied generously and confidently and Van Proyen describes"The grittiness of the pigment enlivens and challenges the pictoral architecture." To quote Jon Alain Guzik..."Spruell's work creates a disconnect, a pile up of expressionistic form and thought.Spruell makes art that reads like a page from the beautiful detritus heap of 20th century culture".

Both Christian and Annie were identified at San Francisco Art Institute as painters who showed distinct promise. They have both been exhibiting their work throughout the U.S often in alternative spaces. Bucheon is pleased to be able to provide an opportunity for people to see how impressively both artists have evolved with a very exciting show of new paintings and drawings.
