MICHELE BRODY

'LOOKING OUT'
A Hydroponic Installation

SEPTEMBER 2 - OCTOBER 23, 2004

'Looking Out' is a site-generated installation for the Project Room at Littlejohn Contemporary inspired by a desire to recreate what the view behind its walls could be and the potential of how nature could over-run the urbanscape if left to its own devices.

The foundation of Michele Brody's work is based on producing a sense of the phenomenon known as the Limen. It is the threshold through which one passes at the starting point for a new state or experience. In her work this notion of creating a mark, which invites the viewer to a more openness of sensation, has been realized through the production of site-generated walkways, passages and sculptures that incorporate fabric, light and water to support the growth of plant-
life as well as responses to the city and landscape through manhole covers and photographic installations.

The variety of materials and techniques incorporated into Michele Brody's work can vary widely due to the nature of each exhibition location. Within the gallery, her sculptural pieces utilize the process of hydroponics and illumination to stimulate the growth of plants within fabric walls, glass tubes, and hand-made paper. While out of doors her experience includes the installation of one-of-a-kind cast concrete walkways where grass still grows in-between a lace-like pattern, the accentuation of existing structures through the act of fitting them with tightly sewn fabric, as well as the proposal to install uniquely designed manhole covers into city streets and sidewalks.

By incorporating the liminal experience with its message of change and transformation, as witnessed in the life cycle of flora or the ever changing makeup of city streets, Ms. Brody wishes to subtly plant within the viewer a desire to be more aware of the tenuous relationship between themselves, nature, and the urban environment. Additionally, her intention is to communicate the delicate characteristics of memory and how time can both erode and enhance our interpretations of experience.

'NATURE'S METAPHOR'

NEW PAINTINGS

SEPTEMBER 2 - OCTOBER 2, 2004

Littlejohn Contemporary is pleased to present its second exhibition of recent paintings by west-coast artist Brad Durham. His recent work consists of beautifully executed, luminous and layered paintings of ethereal birds or flowers hovering over a network of tree branches and leaves. These primary objects, in focus in the foreground, contrast with the background's multiple layering of increasing haziness, generating a mysterious depth and creating an interplay that becomes a pictorial equivalent to energy. Despite the recognizable forms, one often ends up viewing these works as quasi-abstractions, more like the synthesis that transforms elements of nature from one life phase to another.
In a recent statement about his work the artist has said:
'The language of my work is about the dialogue between the sacred and corporeal. It is about observation, remembering; about seeing into the worlds that lie beyond passive awareness--- seeing forms as beautiful metaphors for what might be called a Goethean 'passage'. As such, it is about re-looking at our constructs, beliefs, and reforming an intentionalized awareness: finding the nature and quality of being.
Within the language of my art, dichotomies exist between the world of the intellect and that of the senses---forming an idea of a transcendental 'other'. It is this recontextualizing of the painting that I wish to (in)form: to recreate ideas of a purposeful, and sensual, dialogue---an experience of sublimity and grace.'
