The artist drew wherever she went, whenever she could, and most everything she observed; the drawings provide an intimate insight into the artist’s experience and creative process.

comunicato stampa

Drawings by long time San Francisco resident Judith Clancy (1933 - 1990) explore diverse subjects such as her travels to France (and other destinations), scenes of San Francisco and New York, and include intimate portraits of family and friends – such as M.F.K. Fisher. Clancy drew wherever she went, whenever she could, and most everything she observed; the drawings provide an intimate insight into the artist’s experience and creative process.

In 1975 Clancy visited France for the first time in seventeen years, and returned annually until 1990. During the 1980’s the drawings she made there were exhibited in San Francisco and New York as well as in France. Her work appeared regularly in The New Yorker, Gourmet, and Architectural Digest. In 1986 she was invited to have a solo exhibition at the Musee’ Carnavalet in Paris, the first time an American had received such an honor. Six drawings were included in the Achenbach’s 1989 “New Acquisitions” exhibition. In January 1990 she completed drawings for the illustration of what was to become Peter Mayle’s best-selling book “A Year in Provence”. She died shortly thereafter, on February 7, 1990, leaving behind a treasury of over eighty sketchbooks that chronicle the interests, aesthetics and observations of a lifetime.

The Legion of Honor is presenting an exhibition of over twenty of her sketchbooks from September 18, 2004 through January 16, 2005, titled “Observations Of The Spirit: The Sketchbooks of Judith Clancy, 1950 – 1990.

On the occasion of this special exhibition, we are pleased to present and make available a selection of Judith Clancy’s drawings.

There will be a reception on Wednesday, September 15 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.
