DON PERLIS
'A SURVEY OF LARGE SCALE NARRATIVE PAINTINGS'
(Based on Opera, Literature and Mythology)
The current exhibition is a survey of Perlis’ familiar narratives as well as an introduction to new work. The intimate interiors, sensuous figuration, and sumptuous coloration of his past paintings are further investigated, examining new themes and subject matter. References to history, mythology, literature, classical architecture, and opera mingle on Perlis’ allegorical stage where he directs them into a personalized and thoroughly contemporary narrative.
MICHAEL MUT
'SCRAPINGS-RECENT PAINTINGS'
Mut’s recent works are evidence of his continued exploration of applying new forms of painting with standard contemporary materials. His spontaneous explosive paintings exude the artist’s love of recycling old materials and creating new artistic statements from experience. From cleaning out buckets of old paint Mut was inspired by the scrapings he made. These scrapings offered variant hues of color, diverse forms and shapes with texture-- in essence a new product was formed by the artist to continue to create something new. As in Mut’s earlier work these works share a sense of immediacy and are atmospheric in nature. In contrast to Mut’s earlier two dimensional work these works; with their layered scrapings of paint applied on wood panel give the new work an element of dimensionality. The actual order and structure is secondary to the overall feeling of each piece. Although each work has an appearance of structure and order; trial and error is a paramount ingredient to the intensity of the fire of each work.
There will be an opening reception for the artists, Thursday, October 7th, 6 - 8pm
