Two exibitions

Pedro Cabrita Reis
Galleries 1 and 3

Acclaimed Lisbon-based artist Pedro Cabrita Reis (b. 1956) will produce a new body of work for Camden Arts Centre, in his first solo exhibition in London. The new work by Cabrita Reis will engage with the architecture of the newly-renovated Centre and the different registers of space offered by Galleries 1 and 3. In the white cube of Gallery 1, he will produce a piece which responds to the recessed light wells in the ceiling, whilst his work for Gallery 3 will react to the very different context afforded by the 19th-century former library space.

The work of Pedro Cabrita Reis embraces painting, sculpture and site-specific installation. Underpinning his practice is an interest in architecture and construction, reflected in his recurrent use of found, recycled or industrial materials, such as neon tubing, doors and concrete blocks. For Cabrita Reis, these materials, with their references to the everyday built environment or the building site, are loaded with memories and associations, both individual and collective.

Francis Picabia
Gallery 2

Camden Arts Centre presents a selection of 14 paintings by Francis Picabia from the late 1940s and early 1950s, including some never seen before in the UK, borrowed from collections across Europe.

Francis Picabia (1879–1953) was one of the most exciting painters of the first half of the 20th century and is an enduring influence on artists working today. He adopted many different artistic styles throughout his career, including Cubism, Futurism and Dada, continually exploring the new visual language of modernism being developed at the time in industry, fashion and photography.
