We Are Not In Kansas Anymore - Toto
Von Lintel Gallery is pleased to present We Are Not In Kansas Anymore - Toto, an exhibition of new work by Arnold Helbling. The artist's lush acrylic paintings feature skittering streaks and brushy splashes of high-keyed color--punctuated by incidental drips and blobs creating constellations of marks that take on the look of gestural abstract painting. Bringing the physical world back into abstraction, Helbling begins each painting with a pre-existing structural armature. Utilizing various sources such as anonymous building facades, architectural ornament or residual marks from the studio floor, Helbling abbreviates the original images to the point of notation, and allows them to shift from the abstract to the concrete and back again. A process of layering and simultaneity informs the work, which is as much about dissolving an image as creating one. The longer one looks at Helbling's paintings the more the different modes of representation assert themselves, relationships unfold and the various marks begin to take on a narrative presence. Viewing Helbling's work is an experience akin to Dorothy looking through the window of her house while she whirls about the tornado in "The Wizard of Oz".
Arnold Helbling was born in Switzerland and currently lives and works in New York City. He has exhibited internationally throughout the last decade.
