These Dandies are in Focus
Bruno Marina Gallery is delighted to present These Dandies are in Focus, an exhibition of new paintings by Craig Taylor.
In a departure from the ironic figuration of his peers, Taylor investigates the continuing possibilities of abstraction. Although at times loose and painterly his paintings are not gestural in the Abstract Expressionist sense, but slowly and deliberately constructed from the mind’s eye. Something of a modern-day flaneur or dandy, Taylor collects visual impressions, such as the neat rows of colorful shirts spotted in a Madison Avenue shop window, which later become fodder for his work.
Taylor shares with artists like Jonathan Lasker and Bernard Piffaretti a philosophical interest in the process of making abstract paintings, especially the interplay between calculation and spontaneity. But while those painters have narrowed the focus of their investigations, Taylor has not confined his experiments in the same way. Any trepidation the artist may feel in probing the modernist tradition seems mitigated by the obvious joy and vibrancy of these works. Taylor was born in Baraboo, Wisconsin in 1971, and raised in Kansas City. He lives and works in Brooklyn. After a debut in Berlin, These Dandies are in Focus is his first solo exhibition in the United States.
