Drawings -sculptures

From March 10th to April 24th, 2005 the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung will present an homage to the Greek sculptor and draftsman Joannis Avramidis (born 1922; living in Vienna). The focus of the exhibition will be a range of outstanding drawings that will be accompanied by a selection of sculptures. Avramidi’s artistic output has proven to be standard-setting, prevailing during the second half of the 20th century as an incontrovertible work group.

His lifework is a reflection of the thousand-year-old tradition of Mediterranean visual culture, whereby the human figure - his central theme - has been radically and newly construed from within.

The system and strict regularity of the artistic process force – to a large extent – the elimination of subjective arbitrariness.

Avramidis’ utopist idea of an »absolute figure« grows out of the steady struggle between »data« wrestled from nature and compelled construction, born of ideas: drawing and sculpture as an irreconcilably integrated reconciliation to an ideal pan-temporal view of man, which must be recreated.

Since the late-1940’s, the beginning and core of Avramidis’ work has been his drawings, which have lost none of their essential position within the artist's total oeuvre. The many hundred drawings comprising the comprehensive work group of student drawings already denote an origination: drawings after nature – initially nudes and busts, later portraits, tree and landscape studies - evidence of a direct, lively approach that, for Avramidis, is always the exploratory starting point of perceptible phenomena of inherent structures, marked by dimension and proportion.
