Mesmerizing Force
g-module presents the first solo exhibition in Europe of Maureen McQuillan: a signature show featuring McQuillan’s recent ink and acrylic polymer drawings on paper. Optical effects, morphing scientific experimentation or purely cyber spatial enigmas: all the drawings have the same mesmerizing force that results from McQuillan’s vision and process, in the lineage of William Wood or Victor Vasarely.
McQuillan’s drawings consist of wave-like strands of impossibly thin and vibrating lines, suggesting linear mappings, topologic forms or scientific monitoring. In this current series, she gives yet another dimension to her low-tech process, which paradoxically results in works of rich visual complexity. Strange, alternately ordered and disrupted masses of lines, dots, and blobs converge and diverge into fluid masses and grid-like structures, lifting up into three dimensions in places or remaining on the surface in others. As if in a laboratory, McQuillan creates a “microbial†universe of growth and replication, a reminder of the strangeness of the virtual and biotechnical realities we encounter everyday.
McQuillan lives and works in New York City. Her work has been exhibited at The Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, Maryland; the National Gallery, Costa Rica; Islip Art Museum, New York; John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Wisconsin; The College of New Rochelle, NY; and The Drawing Center, NY, among many others.
