Works from Humanity Struggles Series, 1991-Â2003
Lawrence Asher Gallery proudly presents works by Los Angeles-based, Israeli
artist Rhea Carmi taken from her Humanity Struggles Series 1991 Â 2003.
This dynamic collection, curated by Peter Frank, was chosen from one of
three ongoing series Rhea created which poignantly reflect the human
condition. These mixed media canvasses explore the past while offering hope
to the future through their passionate display of texture and color.
Rhea's early, fearless, physical use of material and paint established a
foundation from which her expanding body of work evolves today. These
deeply emotional and uncompromisingly powerful works confidently lure the
viewer deeper into a place where life's lessons can be quietly considered or
vehemently deliberated. The savvy businesswoman, nurturing mother, doting
grandmother, supportive wife, champion tennis player and scrutinizing
observer fuel Rhea Carmi's spirit, one that provides us with these works and
promises more.
Rhea Carmi was born in Jerusalem in 1942. She served in the Israeli Defense
Forces where she met her husband, Meir, of 44 years. Rhea studied visual art
at Tel-Aviv Open University (1974 Â 1976) and then attended Ramat-Gan
Institute for the Arts (1977 Â 1979). Her mentors in the formative years of
her career were noted Israeli artists Arie Aroch and Moti Mizrahi. In 1981,
Rhea, Meir and their two children left Israel for a new start in Los
Angeles. She paints daily in her attic studio, often late into the night.
The past twenty-five years have produced many diverse works shown here and
abroad to the delight and approval of her blossoming audience.
Lawrence Asher Gallery presents works from "Humanity Struggles" series in
the main gallery while offering a glimpse of other works from Rhea Carmi's
"Everlasting Spirit" and "Humanity's Resilience" series in the south gallery
for this five-week exhibit through Saturday, July 9th, 2005.
